Great review Matt!
I finished this a while ago, but this is my first chance to comment. Before reading this book, I had leagues and fathoms mixed up in my head, so I thought the story was about them going very deep instead of a long distance adventure.
We seem to have a running theme with our last two July BOTM selections that feature the slaughter of sperm whales - We should make that theme for the July 2018 nominations.
This novel was darker than I has expected. Other derivative works (League of Extraordinary Gentleman and the 1970s Captain Nemo Cartoon) portrayed Captain Nemo as more of a hero, when in reality, I think he was more similar to Captain Ahab.
