Jonathan Sheen | 23 comments Lots of fun stuff in this election.

The incumbent congressman Danica Roem beat and thus deposed was the author of Virginia's version of the abhorrent "bathroom bill," which required transgender persons to use bathrooms inappropriate to their gender. Better still, when asked to comment on Bob Marshall, the bigoted congressman she so soundly defeated, she said, "I don't attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now." I don't think there's enough aloe vera in existence to soothe that burn!

Meanwhile, back in January, in New Jersey, a state legislator posted a sexist meme about the Women's March, asking if it would be over in time to cook dinner. That angered one woman in his district so much that, although she had no experience in politics, she ran for his seat -- and won Tuesday night, removing him from office!

Message of equality getting out to the next generation. Things are getting better where it counts

message 61: by James (new)

James Corprew https://www.reuters.com/article/us-fr...

"PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday unveiled measures aimed at educating the public and schoolchildren about sexism and violence against women and improving police support for victims.

During his campaign Macron, who won the presidential election in May, promised to rethink sexual politics and gender equality, which he made a national cause for his five-year mandate.

The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has accelerated a rethink of attitudes toward sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.

“Let’s seal a pact of equality between men and women,” Macron said in a speech marking the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

About violence and sexual abuse, he said: “It is essential that shame changes camp.”

Yeah, nice speech.
Now I'd love the guy's actions to follow his preach... "I would like to have a woman as Prime Minister" (March 8th): nope. "a minister dedicated to Women Rights": nope. "no budget cut for women rights' associations": hmm, yes, you did. And so on. Now is time for action, it's getting hard to buy on promises after so many weren't kept.

Quite the same can be said for Austria. One of my former colleagues said when the European Championship took place this summer: Wow, I wouldn't have expected this from the women.
I think it was for many the first time that they watched a women's football match in the telly, so I am glad to be able to say we achieved some progress here as well!

AUSTRIA SAID YES! TO MARRIAGE EQUALITY! Finally, it is not being discriminated between same-sex and different-sex couples anymore!
Also, heterosexual couples can now have a civil union and all of this no later than Jan1, 2019.

The Harvey Weinstein affair seems to produce a real change in how people percieve sexual harrassment.

I know some people who gave a damn about sexual harrassement before Harvey Weistein affair who became real advocates against that.

What I want to say is mediatization of Harvey Weinstein affair changed and is still changing mentality and behavior of people, and even old thinking people, in a good way.

I think it's the start of a giant progress for women freedom and for feminism obviously.

Have you noticed the same thing where you live ?

P.S. : I'm new here, so sorry if I posted this comment in the wrong place.

i agree, lewis (and, welcome) that bringing this out into the light is making a big difference for women, both in the areas of letting people know it's not ok, and also in letting victims be able to speak out.

one neg. thing that's come out of this, and it's about personal issues for some, is that there are a lot of people out there who have been sexually abused/assaulted in the past, but, because they are 'nobodies' and it wasn't done by someone in the limelight, they still have no voice and no closure for what's been done to them.

it's been very triggering in a neg. way to a lot of traumatized people. it's really too bad that there isn't a way that this kind of thing could be helpful to all victims.

unfortunately, what with statute of limitations, perps who are family members, overwhelming shame and guilt that continues to traumatize these people, not being believed by their families, etc. etc., they continue to suffer.

many have chosen not to be involved with watching this whole chain of events unfold because it's too painful for them to see. the same goes for the #metoo movement. it breaks my heart.

As a man, I know what harassment means cause I lived that in my past. I can say these scars are hard to vanish and even if time can partly vanish them, they remains inside ourselves and are unfortunately a part of our history.

Thus, I understand it's hard for those who lived these awful things to bring out their scars.

But if it can bring a better future to our children, I think it's definitely a good thing.

I think we we should fight for the new Monument to be in Washington DC. The black community im postive dont mind it close to the MLK Monument, if they claim no space. Because im black. HeForShe will try to fight for this to happen. As for a concept...how about the impire state building in NYC and Susan .B Anthony coming out of the face of the building screaming and a tears, then have a puddle under the right eye and have HeForShe in the puddle or men and women holding hands. I like HeForShe better though because this is what she fought so that gender equality could come about for all of us.

Wait but men lusted over these women for decades. Where is the equity?

They should be replaced by a bunch of dumb male hunks wearing very little to objectify! It's our turn!

Agree: US soccer players should be paid more given their victories
Disagree: Women should be paid more because they are women.

Let's even the playing field by paying for accomplishments not entitlements. You do the work, you bring in the fans and the ads and get wins you should have a better pay.

Male hunks on display: how about we have a male and female cheerleading squad?

That kind of brings up an interesting point.

Are you saying that the former Dart Girls or female cheerleaders or any sort of "eye candy" are dumb?

My SO and I were discussing the sexism in women's Legends Football League the other day

https://photos.smugmug.com/Sports/Tam...

- They were skimpy uniforms that are most definitely used to titillate. But nothing worse than what a Beach Volleyball player wears.
- We discussed their legitimacy of their athleticism and if it is undermined by their uniforms.
- Are the players body positive for wearing clothes like that?
- Are they doing a service to feminists wearing their current uniforms?
- Are the players a bunch of dumb jocks or dumb bimbos?

Jakari Bruce | 62 comments No most male athletes deserve more than females because they garner more viewers and are more successful and what not, for all sports besides soccer men and women get paid as much as they should based on how much they make their teams. For soccer, no one watches us men’s or women’s soccer but the women are much better so deserve more pay, can’t make same argument for other sports unfortunately

Robert Smart | 359 comments Jakari wrote: "No most male athletes deserve more than females because they garner more viewers and are more successful and what not, for all sports besides soccer men and women get paid as much as they should ba..."

One possible reason for men garnering more viewers is the amount of AIR Time afforded them by the networks. You can force a sucky male team down peoples throats if that is all there is to watch and they will end up looking pretty good because of it.
I am also not hinting that I think the female teams suck, so don't put those words in my mouth thanks.

If female athletes had equal AIR Time to the men I bet they would also garner some high viewer ratings as well without any problem doing so..

It is expected that the Supreme Courts of Austria decide on a non-binary status in the civil status law in 2018:) I hope they actually get their act together and finally decide this now, as the Upper Austrian Court has denied it and so it was passed on to the Supreme Courts.

Even if I'm not a fan of soccer, I broadly prefer to watch a women soccer match because their game are more "smart" than men. I find their tactic more elaborate.
