I've only read the first book and I only thought it was okay. I don't think it's all that special. I don't own any other books of the series and probably won't be picking up the second one for a while. I've only watched about half of the first movie too. I think the sorting quizzes are fun though.

So, I haven't read Harry Potter. *gasp*
Nope, I'm not really interested in reading it either. *gasp x2*
I'm not intereste..."
You're not the only one. I feel so bad too because of how important the series is, but I've watched all the movies so that might be why I haven't read the books. I'd rather spend my time reading books that I haven't read yet rather than books I already know what happens. It's also why I don't usually re-read books. I barely have enough time as it is, so I should spend it reading new stories

Harry Potter is not on my priority/TBR list right now, but someday I may pick it up. MAY being the keyword.

I used to be a mild Potter "hater" having only partially watched the movies beforehand, there was no way I was going to read something so nerdy. However when the brand new copy of the 6th book arrived mysteriously in my mail box one faithful day, I started reconsidering my hatred for the series. I decided to finally put aside my ignorance and started reading the book. And despite not having read the previous books in the series, I absolutely wholeheartedly fell in love with the world, characters, the witty writing style etc. It was the best thing that happened to my 13 year old self.
After reading the last and final book, which btw I finished in just two day, i went back and read the 3rd book and then the rest. I didn't read them in the right order and yet loved it. I'm currently re-reading the 6th book and yep it's as good as it was when i read it the first time.
For those that have only read the first book and gave up on the rest, please reconsider your decision as it does get better and better. A LOT BETTER!
However,
I do believe HP is more popular among those who grew up reading it and among the younger audience. I as an adult, if I hadn't read the books previously, wouldn't want to read it as I'm not really into that sort of thing anymore. I haven't read the Percy Jackson series, because I don't feel like it, but I'm sure it's great.

I know she "kills" people and I couldn't handled it at the time.
So I bought the audio CD. And it's waiting on my to Read list.

I hate the movies, but the books aren't boring at all like them.

I used to hate the books just for being popular. I was 11 when the first book with 11 yo Harry Potter came out. Everyone I knew loved the books and pushed me to pick them up. The 6th book came out by the time I finished school and finally there was no one to tell me I had to read them anymore. So the coward I am, I picked them up. I realized I had been ignorant. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Fantasy I ended up loving the books. I'm not saying you should pick them up!! I'm just saying you shouldn't refuse something for it's popularity. It goes both ways btw. Ever since I realized that sometimes the mass is right, (including with Twilight, which I loved at the time - still not interested in Fantasy or anything paranormal) there have also been books most people loved and I didn't really care for. I did pick them up nevertheless and gave them a try (including the Percy Jackson and ACOTAR series).
What I'm saying is that you should not refuse something point blank. You might end up missing out on something, and if you in fact don't like what you picked up, you get to at least give reasons why you didn't like it, to make your point ;)

to me it is not only ignorant but stupid too, because yes ofcourse there are popular books out there that are overhyped as fuck and in my or your opinion really bad and do not deserve their popularity, but there are some books that are popular for a reason, you know. to me, harry potter is a perfect example of that—not trying to force you to read them or anything just my opinion.
if you avoid hyped up books because you're scared of having an unpopular opinion about them, that's totally okay. me personally, i'm not afraid to speak my mind even if its unpopular bc i dont really give a fuck what other ppl think of my opinion and if i have an opinion i want it to be heard—but if you're not like that i can understand why you avoid hyped up books.
but on the other hand, if you simply avoid them because they're popular, that seems a lil ???? to me. a waste of a chance of reading a book you might really love. acotar, harry potter, percy jackson are some examples of very very hyped up series that i love very much. ofcourse you will be disappointed sometimes, but not all the time. give popular books a try, and if you want to avoid certain books, do it for an actual reason.
:)

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Harry Potter, I just don't. I think that the story started to have too many holes in it as it went on, almost as if Rowling was getting tired of writing it and running out of ideas. I think it's a great way to get children interested in fantasy literature, I just don't see any reason to read HP over and over again like I do The Hobbit or LotR.
I do think it's ridiculous to avoid HP or any popular book just for that reason. If you think you might like a book, READ IT! We all read Twilight didn't we? I picked up ACOTAR because I'd heard so many good things about it. Did I like it? No. Will I continue it? No. Do I care that people with a Maas boner will constantly ask me why? No. Just because a book is popular doesn't mean it's good or bad. It doesn't mean you'll like it, but it doesn't mean you won't either.
I'm also a believer that spoilers are BS. No matter what someone tells you about what happened in a book/movie/tv show, your personal experience will always be different! I'm just starting GoT and I can't tell you how many times people have "spoiled" what happens for me. Does that mean that I'm suddenly ripped out of the story because I know what's coming? NO! I cried my eyes out at the end of season 1 even though I knew it was coming. No one can "spoil" your interpretation of events.
Anyway, I'm not a HP "hater" but I will never finish the series, book or film. It's just not my thing.

However! If you like mysteries, you might want to read the three-book (so far) series she has written under the pen name "Robert Galbraith." They are awesome. They are NOT for children (probably not even teens), however. And let me warn you off of the first book she wrote post-Potter. The Casual Vacancy was full of such horrifyingly awful people that I couldn't finish it because I didn't want to associate with them any more. But the Galbraith novels starring detective Cormorant Strike are fab.
