Cassie 'The Thinker Go Go Go Go' Mis. Roben Goodfellow'\Isabelle Lightwood (cassiecrow) | 168 comments I'm not one of those pushy\ rude people because everyone is entitled to there own opinion and all that. But to answer your question... I don't know. Because I've read up to book 6? Maybe? But it's taken me YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS to get to that point. Plus will most likely take me YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS to actually finish it and the seventh one. So by the time I'm back to reading it in another 5 or so years I'm most likely to forget almost all the details that happened already or in book 5.

I've only read the first book and I only thought it was okay. I don't think it's all that special. I don't own any other books of the series and probably won't be picking up the second one for a while. I've only watched about half of the first movie too. I think the sorting quizzes are fun though.

You're not the only one. I feel so bad too because of how important the series is, but I've watched all the movies so that might be why I haven't read the books. I'd rather spend my time reading books that I haven't read yet rather than books I already know what happens. It's also why I don't usually re-read books. I barely have enough time as it is, so I should spend it reading new stories

Valeria Laurino (valerialaurino) | 170 comments You probably are part of a minority. At this point, HP is almost a mandatory read for many people. But to each his own. Many people don't really enjoy reading Fantasy because they don't find it believable, which is fine and understandable. Or they like Fantasy, but not the type of Fantasy that's in HP, with the kids and the wands. And sometimes a series is sooo popular that it makes you not want to read it because the people who read it are super annoying about it, the HP fandom included. Or at least that happens to me. Thankfully, I'm not like that and I haven't met anyone like that either, but I know they're out there, forcing others to read HP and then saying things like, "Are you dumb? How can you not like it?!" if you didn't like it. Those people suck.

message 11: by Lance (new)

Lance (sportsbookguy) Nope - I never have read any of them and never will. I won't knock those who love it. I just have ZERO interest in them and that isn't going to change.

message 12: by Megha (new)

Megha (megha_42) | 19 comments I'm sure you're not alone. Up until last year I've never thought if reading HP either but then one day I randomly picked it up and loved it. Not saying that everyone has to like it or what not but I'd say give it a try. Maybe? Also, all my family and friends know nothing about HP and always pick on me for loving it so much but I shake 'em off and go on loving it. So yeah everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Harry Potter is not on my priority/TBR list right now, but someday I may pick it up. MAY being the keyword.

Nikki "The Crazie Betty" V. | 2 comments You are definitely not the only one. I've watched the first 4 movies just to try and understand, but I was so bored through them. Fantasy in general is definitely not my favorite genre, but there is absolutely zero believability in these stories so I have no intention of reading the books, or finishing the movies. And I never feel bad telling people as much when they ask if I've read them, or insist that I should. When someone tells me I'm missing out, I reply with 'missing out' would imply that I care. Which I don't.

message 21: by Ira (new)

Ira (goodreadscomirayasa) | 41 comments It's quite interesting how I got into the series.

I used to be a mild Potter "hater" having only partially watched the movies beforehand, there was no way I was going to read something so nerdy. However when the brand new copy of the 6th book arrived mysteriously in my mail box one faithful day, I started reconsidering my hatred for the series. I decided to finally put aside my ignorance and started reading the book. And despite not having read the previous books in the series, I absolutely wholeheartedly fell in love with the world, characters, the witty writing style etc. It was the best thing that happened to my 13 year old self.

After reading the last and final book, which btw I finished in just two day, i went back and read the 3rd book and then the rest. I didn't read them in the right order and yet loved it. I'm currently re-reading the 6th book and yep it's as good as it was when i read it the first time.

For those that have only read the first book and gave up on the rest, please reconsider your decision as it does get better and better. A LOT BETTER!

However,

I do believe HP is more popular among those who grew up reading it and among the younger audience. I as an adult, if I hadn't read the books previously, wouldn't want to read it as I'm not really into that sort of thing anymore. I haven't read the Percy Jackson series, because I don't feel like it, but I'm sure it's great.

message 23: by Karen (new)

Karen Hornyak I have most of the Harry Potter. But the last 2...
I know she "kills" people and I couldn't handled it at the time.
So I bought the audio CD. And it's waiting on my to Read list.

Vickey I read the first 3 and started book 4 and realized that I just didn't care. I have no plans to ever finish the books and I already know what happens anyway thanks to the popularity of the series.

I hate the movies, but the books aren't boring at all like them.

message 31: by Angelina (new)

Angelina Werner (angelinawerner) | 14 comments You don't have to read them! Nobody is forcing anyone and everyone is allowed to not be interested in a premise of a story. But refusing to read something just because it's too popular seems a little ignorant to me.
I used to hate the books just for being popular. I was 11 when the first book with 11 yo Harry Potter came out. Everyone I knew loved the books and pushed me to pick them up. The 6th book came out by the time I finished school and finally there was no one to tell me I had to read them anymore. So the coward I am, I picked them up. I realized I had been ignorant. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Fantasy I ended up loving the books. I'm not saying you should pick them up!! I'm just saying you shouldn't refuse something for it's popularity. It goes both ways btw. Ever since I realized that sometimes the mass is right, (including with Twilight, which I loved at the time - still not interested in Fantasy or anything paranormal) there have also been books most people loved and I didn't really care for. I did pick them up nevertheless and gave them a try (including the Percy Jackson and ACOTAR series).
What I'm saying is that you should not refuse something point blank. You might end up missing out on something, and if you in fact don't like what you picked up, you get to at least give reasons why you didn't like it, to make your point ;)

message 32: by Angelina (new)

Angelina Werner (angelinawerner) | 14 comments And Taylor, you don't have to pick them up! I think having been spoiled for all major plot points is reason enough to not be interested anymore! Ignore everyone who says differently!

annesofie (ananasofie) | 204 comments "refusing to read something just because it's popular seems a little ignorant" say👏🏼it👏🏼louder👏🏼for👏🏼the👏🏼people👏🏼in👏🏼the👏🏼back👏🏼

to me it is not only ignorant but stupid too, because yes ofcourse there are popular books out there that are overhyped as fuck and in my or your opinion really bad and do not deserve their popularity, but there are some books that are popular for a reason, you know. to me, harry potter is a perfect example of that—not trying to force you to read them or anything just my opinion.

if you avoid hyped up books because you're scared of having an unpopular opinion about them, that's totally okay. me personally, i'm not afraid to speak my mind even if its unpopular bc i dont really give a fuck what other ppl think of my opinion and if i have an opinion i want it to be heard—but if you're not like that i can understand why you avoid hyped up books.

but on the other hand, if you simply avoid them because they're popular, that seems a lil ???? to me. a waste of a chance of reading a book you might really love. acotar, harry potter, percy jackson are some examples of very very hyped up series that i love very much. ofcourse you will be disappointed sometimes, but not all the time. give popular books a try, and if you want to avoid certain books, do it for an actual reason.

:)

message 34: by Sara (new)

Sara (sarawithoutnh) | 22 comments I've read the first 5 books, but I never finished the series. When HP was first released in the US I was 6 years old, reading at 4th grade level. So, even though I was a little young for HP, my teacher encouraged my mom to buy it for me anyway. I felt like I grew up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione even though they were 5 years older than me. That being said, I felt I was growing out of the books by the time I read the Goblet of Fire. I powered through the Order of the Phoenix, but I remember not being that into it, so I decided not to finish the series.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Harry Potter, I just don't. I think that the story started to have too many holes in it as it went on, almost as if Rowling was getting tired of writing it and running out of ideas. I think it's a great way to get children interested in fantasy literature, I just don't see any reason to read HP over and over again like I do The Hobbit or LotR.

I do think it's ridiculous to avoid HP or any popular book just for that reason. If you think you might like a book, READ IT! We all read Twilight didn't we? I picked up ACOTAR because I'd heard so many good things about it. Did I like it? No. Will I continue it? No. Do I care that people with a Maas boner will constantly ask me why? No. Just because a book is popular doesn't mean it's good or bad. It doesn't mean you'll like it, but it doesn't mean you won't either.

I'm also a believer that spoilers are BS. No matter what someone tells you about what happened in a book/movie/tv show, your personal experience will always be different! I'm just starting GoT and I can't tell you how many times people have "spoiled" what happens for me. Does that mean that I'm suddenly ripped out of the story because I know what's coming? NO! I cried my eyes out at the end of season 1 even though I knew it was coming. No one can "spoil" your interpretation of events.

Anyway, I'm not a HP "hater" but I will never finish the series, book or film. It's just not my thing.

message 37: by Madison (new)

Madison DeJulio No you're not. I haven't read it and used to not plan to. But because it's so popular and pretty much everyone and their mother loves it, I'm curious about it. I never planned to read it because it's about magic and I come from a religious background but I've become more open to what I read lately. So yeah, no. You're completely not alone!

Naomi Nope. I gave the first one a try years ago when everybody was all, "Is this okay? Is this horrible sorcery?" and I didn't think it probably was but could NOT read those books. I just couldn't. I think it was the names of everything and trying to make sense of the "world" and surely if I had been able to piece that together I would've liked them. I donno. I have watched all the movies now, so may I could try again and that wouldn't be a problem. so many other books I want to read though, it's not terribly high on my list.

message 49: by Melliott (new)

Melliott (goodreadscommelliott) | 510 comments To those who only read the first book, she does improve as a writer as she goes along. Well, except for the last book, which is waaaay too long and needed a braver editor.

However! If you like mysteries, you might want to read the three-book (so far) series she has written under the pen name "Robert Galbraith." They are awesome. They are NOT for children (probably not even teens), however. And let me warn you off of the first book she wrote post-Potter. The Casual Vacancy was full of such horrifyingly awful people that I couldn't finish it because I didn't want to associate with them any more. But the Galbraith novels starring detective Cormorant Strike are fab.
