message 1: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm still reading 'Lions of the Valley', and I'm gearing up for my Heartless buddy read.

message 2: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Just finished up We Are Legion (We Are Bob), currently reading Penric's Demon and then planning to pick up The Ship Who Sang

message 3: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Carryover from July: Fool's Assassin on audio and Red Sister

This morning I've started a beta read for Age of War, and in about a week I'll be getting on the beta of The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter as well.

Shaping up to be a busy August..

message 4: by Felina (new)

Felina I got bogged down for a week and a half and made no progress on my current read. Back to it in August!

message 5: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments It's been a tv summer for me - not what I expected when summer started.
I go back to work next week (I'll be teaching 5th grade for at least the next 2 months), and I start classes towards my Bachelors in about 2 or 3 weeks.

So, my goal is to fit in at least one FoF selection (past or present) a month going forward.

Other than that it'll be textbooks again.

message 6: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I've had a lot of book slumps/hangovers this year. I've read a lot less than I normally do. I'm just happy now when I can find a book that keeps my interest until the end.

Being unable to read as much as I like has put a damper on my reviewing as well.

message 7: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I've read less this year, too. I set my Challenge at the lowest number yet, and I'm just barely keeping afloat even still.

I think it's mostly just because I've been busy and tired and I keep falling asleep on the train, which is one of my prime reading times.

message 8: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments That'll do it.

message 9: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Finished Antioch a couple of days ago - a three-star read for me. It's a blend of fantasy and science fiction alternately set in the Egypt of Julius Caesar & Cleopatra and near-future Prague.

Still reading Naruto (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 1: Includes Vols. 1, 2 & 3 (44% done), The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (70%) and Snow Crash (6%), but I also started Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy. I guess I'm on a multi-reading-roll at the moment!

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela | 41 comments I'm reading Tigana and enjoying it so far.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm about halfway through Shadows Linger and completely hooked

message 12: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I've been devoting my attention to Shadowheart (Shadowmarch, #4). I have a stockpile of Tad Williams books I want to get to but don't want to read more than one series by an author at one time.

message 13: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Finished The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue earlier today. I found it to be a good YA historical adventure/romance/fantasy and a 4-star read for me. I would've given it 5 stars except for the way an historical character was (mis-)used.

message 14: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I ended up rereading Tithe and Ironside this weekend.

Debating about whether to push through Lion in the Valley or just call it quits. It's not bad, per se... it's just not doing anything for me.

message 15: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I finished up The Zero Stone this weekend. It was kinda weird re-reading something I hadn't reads since middle school at the earliest.

Interesting

message 18: by Sergio (new)

Sergio Flores (sftowersauthor) | 2 comments Hey everybody! No shame in admitting it, I'm reading Carrie for the first time haha I've lived through two movies already so I figured it was time.

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Finished Shadowheart just a few days ago, finally! ;) I'm back to The Path of Daggers and Thunder and Shadow for now, but I'm also eagerly awaiting my Girls Made of Snow and Glass arc in the mail and I'll be diving into that when it gets to me.

message 20: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Started Sorcerer to the Crown. Not very far in, yet.

Why? I thought you'd started it?

message 23: by Felina (new)

Felina Yeah but I'm not finished so you'll pass me up....you just passed me up.

message 24: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm 24% in.

message 25: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 9 comments I've copies of The Court of Broken Knives and Assassin's Fate waiting for me to finish A Night in the Lonesome October (again) first

message 26: by Cameron (new)

Cameron Smith (cameronwaynesmith) | 8 comments I just finished Liar's Key (Red Queen's War). Now to complete The Final Empire and continue on with the Mistborn series (I'm late to the party).

I've also got "High Noon in Nimbin" audiobook for the car, but Les Norton stories aren't quite fantasy!

message 27: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 9 comments To be controversial, Mistborn did not float my boat at all. Waded through book one, couldn't finish book two at all.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Will wrote: "To be controversial, Mistborn did not float my boat at all. Waded through book one, couldn't finish book two at all."

I haven't read it... but I approve of this message. ;)

message 29: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm thinking of setting up a side/buddy read for Six of Crows. It came in second in our poll, and it's one I've had on my to-read list for awhile.

Let me know if anyone's interested in a buddy read, otherwise I'll just read it myself.

When are you looking to buddy read? I can join in September.

I was planning for September.

message 32: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm looking at it. Sept might work for me, too.

message 33: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Cool. I'll add it my list then. :)

message 34: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Coolio.

message 35: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I might join! I've been eyeing it for a while as well :-)

message 36: by Felina (new)

Felina I also might join but take that with a grain of salt.

I always do... ;)

message 38: by Felina (new)

Felina Hey!

I started The Night Circus in audio. Just as awesome as when I read it for the first time.

message 39: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I started reading Night Circus this morning.

I was worried to do a re-read on this one... but so far, so magical.

message 40: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 9 comments Night circus is on my TBR, but low down. Is it worth bumping up?

message 41: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Started Daughter of Smoke & Bone. I'm only 40-some pages in, but it doesn't seem that awesome or engaging, not like the hype led me to believe. But there's plenty of time for it to get interesting, I guess...well, hope.

I wish you luck with it. It didn't work for me, and I never continued the series.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Will wrote: "Night circus is on my TBR, but low down. Is it worth bumping up?"

Um... it depends?

I really like it. Felina loves it. Becky hates it with a passion...

It's magical realism. The characters are kind of thin, there is no real plot to speak of... but the writing is magical and the circus is wondrous.

So it depends on what floats your boat.

message 44: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 69 comments Just finished The Wonder-Book of Aircraft. Very engaging and thoroughly enjoyable, although there is a single use of language that shows its age (written in 1919) and today would absolutely not be appropriate in a children's book.

Basic aerodynamics, history of flight, predictions for the future, excellent photographs throughout (one shows an airship's giant shadow alongside a steam train and is quite fantastic). Very good book.

I'm also almost finished with The Emperor's Edge. I've enjoyed the characters throughout, and the plot. Steampunk isn't my usual fare but I've liked this. Also handles the female protagonist in a man's world line well, avoiding going into man-bashing/woman-are-wonderful whilst still getting across (albeit in a fictional context) the challenges of prejudice [although that's very much a second tier part of the book].

message 45: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Slowly but consistently chipping away at The Path of Daggers (Wheel of Time, #8) and Thunder and Shadow (Warriors: A Vision of Shadows, #2). I also started re-reading Wazard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1), because I read it six years ago without continuing the series but want to now. I got my ARC of Girls Made of Snow and Glass in the mail today, though, so I'll mostly be reading that for the next few days (only a few pages in, but I like it).

I don't love it. I LURVE it! There is a difference.

message 47: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Ever so sorry that I undersold your feelings...

message 48: by Felina (new)

Felina Apology accepted.

message 49: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments I'm more than a third of the way through Snow Crash and enjoying it so far (although the style of writing was a bit too sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek for me at first). Also over two thirds of the way through Naruto (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 1: Includes Vols. 1, 2 & 3 which I'm also having fun with.

message 50: by Felina (new)

Felina I just started the audio for The Three Musketeers. So far it's pretty good.
