إيمان❤︎ (iaintallbad) | 3 comments Am I the only one who has a really hard time finishing a series or even starting one?
If you want to know how bad it is, I'll let you know that I binge read the first two books of Harry Potter last summer and yes... you guessed it...I haven't even glanced at the rest of it..at all.
I don't know the exact reason but I think I get tired of the characters, or I want to spice it up and read a different book in between but I lose control and end up not wanting to go back again. The number of the books (if it was high) in a series also discourages me before even starting.
I feel like I'm missing on a LOT because of this problem ... any suggestions to help?
Thanks in advance

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 126 comments I don't have this problem and that MIGHT be because I don't read series in a row. I'll read book one, read 1-3 different books between book two, so on, so forth. Doing it that way, for me at least, the stories stay fresher than if I try binging a whole series.

Also, I recommend hopping back on the Potter train. Azkaban is where the series starts to hit its stride, IMO.

Sarah (sarahmango) | 40 comments Honestly, I don't really have this problem. I prefer series to stand-alones because I get attached to the characters and want to keep following their adventures. The only area where series becomes a problem for me is when I have to wait a year for the next book to come out, and by the time it does I've forgotten everything that's happened.

Maybe if you have this problem, the trick is to read less series. Read more stand-alones, or series with less books (duologies and trilogies). If you still want to experience the stories of some of the longer series, maybe here some tips that can help you out:

- find a buddy to read with. A friend to talk about the book with can help motivate your reading process and make you more excited about the plot and characters again.
- mix it up by listening to audio books instead of reading. This may just be the "spicing it up" you need to still want to experience the books. Plus, it's great for multitasking, because you can read while driving/busing to work/school, while doing chores, or when your eyes are just too lazy to move across the page.
- take breaks, but not too long of them. When I do my homework, I tell myself, "I'll finish this assignment and then I'll take a 15 minute break, and then I'll come back for the next assignment." Use the same technique for reading: read the first book, take a break with another, and then come back. The important part is not to extend your break too long, or it will turn into procrastination.
- read multiple books at the same time. Tired of one character? You got another! This allows for you to be able to simultaneously read a series you're hesitant about and spice it up with another book, maybe a fun stand-alone.
