Oh absolutely, most any book can easily be fit into Uno! One way or another!

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Cutthroat is pretty awful for audio readers two. One of our team keeps having to pause one audio & start another! She's Very frustrated with that bit!

One of the teams had a complete meltdown tizzy yesterday over the unfairness and rules and all sorts. It was one of those where you just have to back away quietly & hope they calm down.

Uno is definitely the chill out right now!

Can understand!!

Louise | 1282 comments Ready and waiting 😄

message 106: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Alright! That leaves Leigh, whom we haven't heard from since the thread was first created, so I'm going to send her a small friendly poke.

Now to use the last days to finish the books I'm currently reading so I can start with a clean slate on February 1st!

I'll even try to start with a red cover so that one's out of the way already. But we'll see. I'm almost certain that plan will change.. Because.. you know.. challenge tasks and all that jazz ;-)

message 107: by UNO Pixie, Our UNO Helper (new)

UNO Pixie | 1839 comments Are you ready??

The start of UNO is just around the corner!!

To while away the time a little as we're waiting for the countdown to run out, you could help Snoopy increase his tiny TBR pile and give him some recommendations on what to read next.

Just swing by THIS THREAD for more information and some awesome recommendations. You might just meet your next favourite book!

Eldarwen | 5004 comments So just to keep you updated, I did pm Leigh to poke her about Uno starting soon but I haven't heard back from her yet, and she obviously hasn't posted in the team thread either.

Do click the link in Pixie's post above though! It's fun :-)

message 110: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments typical! I found a yellow book that I want to read, which would fit 0 or 9. i skip over here, delighted with myself, only to find no 0 or 9 yellow needed.

Curses!

I shall try to wait till March...

message 111: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett So I went through my TBR list, and I have a book for almost all cards except the red (even yellow!). So I am cool with anything!

message 112: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Haha, oh those lovely yellow cards ;-)

message 113: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I'm trying to finish up my two current reads before this challenge starts so I can start a new book right away. But I'm sensing it won't happen that way haha because I won't be home tomorrow evening so no reading time at all then.

Maaaaybe I'll get one of the two done. I certainly hope so.

And then I was thinking about starting with The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova .

message 114: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments I’m trying to finish a book up too. Hopefully should only take a couple of days! I’m not sure which card in the hand to aim for. Does anyone else have any preferences?

message 115: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments If you aren't sure which card to aim for, I have two suggestions for you:

1. read whatever you feel like and we'll make it fit for a card somewhere somehow
2. read for a coloured card or a reverse, as those are the trickiest to fill

message 116: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett I think I am going to start with The Selection

message 117: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Could work for blue or even reverse! I read it a while ago.

message 118: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments With the reverses, does it have to be marked on GR - I've read The Historian, but I don't think I've checked it off

message 119: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Well, yes, it should be marked as read on GR since it needs to be verified by captains but if you can't remember when, you don't have to put a read date with it, just as long as you've marked it as read.

Did you enjoy the book? I've heard good and bad, and that it's a little long-winded, which is probably one of the reasons why I kept putting it off - and the size, which isn't very great for certain challenges ;-)

message 120: by Cat (last edited Jan 30, 2018 02:05PM) (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Ooof... I read it ages ago. As I recall I overall enjoyed it for what it was, but did think some pruning would be useful

Marked it as read

message 121: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Good good, Cat! It sounds like something I'd enjoy so here's hoping the wordiness isn't going to get to me too much ;-)

Thanks for checking back in, Leigh!

Challenge starts soon!!! :-D

message 122: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Here is a Countdown to Start of UNO for you to keep an eye on.

The challenge starts on February 1st, but time zones make it a little odd.

Reminder : Only books started AFTER the countdown has run out can be used for the challenge.

message 123: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments Current book finished. Ready to start a new one tomorrow! 😊

message 124: by Eldarwen (last edited Feb 01, 2018 12:56AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments UNO has started!!

Please post your starting books in this thread, and please mention which cards they could work for and why, as far as you know at least.
Once you're done with the book, we'll need a proper completion post that includes all the necessary information such as cards and read date.
Thanks!

LET'S DO THIS :-D
HAPPY READING!

message 125: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Kelly wrote: "Current book finished. Ready to start a new one tomorrow! 😊"

Yay!! Way to go!
I wasn't quite as productive. I got neither of my reads finished >.<

I'll finish one today hopefully, and then I'll read the other one parallel to the first book for Uno.

message 126: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments I’m still open to what I read next and have a huge TBR pile. I’m happy to tailor my reads to what’s needed.

message 127: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hmm.. would you be up to reading for a colour card?

These are the ones we have:
- 3 Red
- 1 Yellow
- 8 Red
- 1 Red
- 8 Blue
- 9 Blue
- 5 Blue

If you want to hunt for something a little trickier, here is a mini challenge for you :-)

In Hand 10, we have a Draw 2 card, which means we read one book for two of the cards in that hand. So, would you like to hunt for a book that fits for 8 Blue as well as either 1 or 0?

message 128: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I'm in the middle (ish) of a couple (Cutthroat plus an inability _not_ to be reading!), but I will look at picking up a hardcopy tonight.

message 129: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments Blue 1 or 0. I shall look! What are the rules again with regards to colour of covers?

message 130: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments 8 Blue!
Don't forget the 8 :-)

The coloured cards are basically normal cards that have a colour attached to them. In this case it's an 8 card with the colour blue.

So you'll need to look for a book that fits for 8 and 0 or 1, and has a blue cover.

What kind of blue doesn't matter, but it needs to be clearly blue. The cover should be at least 50% that colour.

Thanks! :-)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cat wrote: "I'm in the middle (ish) of a couple (Cutthroat plus an inability _not_ to be reading!), but I will look at picking up a hardcopy tonight."

Cool!
Hopefully Cutthroat is going to let you finish your books as well ;-)

message 132: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments yeah.... there's a sabotage available to bid on that means the luckless victim has to read only books with an animal on the cover.

I'm trying to get the other captains to agree to sit that one out. Whilst my team probably isn't sitting high enough to be at risk of getting it, it's just wrong!

And I don't really read books with animals on the cover!

message 133: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Haha, those are the kinds of covers you stumble across by accident, and usually when you don't need them, but if you actually HAVE to read those kinds of covers, you won't find animals on any of your covers...

I rarely read books with animals on cover but the latest In Death I finished actually had a cat on it!

Sounds like it might definitely be better to sit that one out though. If you potentially aren't at risk... then I wouldn't go for that one.

message 134: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Finishing up Strangers (Lucy Clayburn, #1) by Paul Finch then will be reading Lemonade and Lies (Peridale Cafe Mystery #2) by Agatha Frost and

message 135: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett Going to also be reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson which can count for 1 Yellow!

message 136: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Fantastic, ladies!

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Louise wrote: "Finishing up Strangers (Lucy Clayburn, #1) by Paul Finch"

It's absolutely terrible, but whenever I see that author's name, I am immediately thrown back into my high school years and American Pie. But then, they may not have been the best movies but they were funny and had awesome soundtracks. ;-)

message 138: by Katie (new)

Katie | 230 comments Happy 1st day of UNO! I've just started Midnight Rescue (Killer Instincts, #1) by Elle Kennedy . I have no idea what it'll work for, since I haven't looked, but surely something! :)

message 139: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Oh, they always fit something :-)

I'll throw it in for a Draw 2 card to take care of a 6 and a Skip card - character and author name.

message 140: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee | 370 comments I have an 8 blue. Does it have to work for the 0 or 1, or can we use it for one of the 3s in hand 10?

message 141: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments We can also use it for one of the 3s, no problem!

It was just a thought to try and pair it with another card so the second Draw 2 could be used with the two 3 cards.

But whatever the book works for that's how we'll use it! :-)

Ok. Then I am starting Hokus Pokus by Fern Michaels if you agree that this is enough blue

message 143: by Eldarwen (last edited Feb 01, 2018 10:22AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I'm going to have to say no to that one, sorry. The middle part of greenish/grey overweighs unfortunately. :-(

Sorry!

Eta: You can still read it though, it'll just be used for something else then :-)

message 144: by Eldarwen (last edited Feb 01, 2018 10:43AM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Going to kick the challenge off with Carpe Corpus (The Morganville Vampires, #6) by Rachel Caine , which can be used for the Draw 2 in hand 11 to cover the 6 and the 8, characters Shane and Eve.

And then this weekend, when I'll hopefully have some hours of proper reading time, which hasn't been the case at all in January, I'll start The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova for 8 Red.

message 145: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments Do screenplays count? I’ve JK Rowlings Fantastic Beasts with a blue cover. I’ve also the Little Theatre by the Sea. Both could be Blue 0

message 146: by Eldarwen (last edited Feb 01, 2018 01:04PM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I imagine that screen plays would count, yes. The rules would be the same ones as for plays, poetry books, children's books, etc. The word count needs to be verified as being over 25.000 words, which unfortunately isn't the case for Fantastic Beasts.

The Little Theatre by the Sea: Escape to sunny Sardinia with the perfect summer read! would definitely work for a blue cover!
It also works for the 0 card as it is a stand-alone book.

The blue card in hand 10 needs to fit for 8 as well though because the card is "8 Blue". So, does the book have a character name or nickname that starts with E? Or is the setting somewhere that starts with E?

Ooor, we could use the book for the 9 Blue card in a different hand. In that case, the book would have to have a character name or nickname that starts with N, or a setting that starts with N.
(The 9 Blue card is in a different hand.)

message 147: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I've started In Patagonia
Which is:
I title (thats 5?)
P setting (Patagonia, obvs)
stand alone

no colour though

message 148: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 314 comments No N or E related characters or setting as far as I can see. However I’ll be starting this one tonight.

message 149: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Yep, I is 5. And that's where we'll slot it in as well. :-)

K and P for the Skip card are usually easier to find than I or V (card 7).

message 150: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I thought so, but wanted you to have the complete range of options :)
