Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments Michelle’s Book Of The Month Club Challenge

I’m subscribed to the book subscription box called Book of the Month for over a year or so now and I’ve only read 3 of their books. (I was also subscribed to the Owlcrate box but since I’m still subscribed and getting more books, this is my BOTM books challenge.)

So I am pushing myself to read those dozen or more books that I haven’t read yet.

Goal is to listen to at least one or more audiobook that I own per month. Also I’ve subscribed to the Audible Romance Package so I might as well listen to those.

Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments Re-Read Limits

When I’m in a reading slump I tend to re-read my favorites. Last year I re-read quite a few. This year I would like to limit that so I can work on reading books that I own.

I plan on re-reading the Harry Potter series again this year. But also plan on reading some of the short kindle books and re-reading Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts for the first time.

The other limit of re-reads (not including Harry Potter): 5

1. The Hobbit
2. Pride and Prejudice
3. Frankenstein
4.
5.

This group helps a lot with encouraging me out of the reading slumps that I get into sometimes - the enthusiasm is infectious!

I give myself a lot of permission for re-reading old favourites though and I like the idea of your list - it's permission to indulge when you need it :) When I'm in a bad space with my anxiety, I sometimes find it hard to read at all as my ability to process new information is limited and it all gets soaked up by work. I've realised that going back to particular old favourites can help to get me over the slump - they are undemanding, pure pleasure and remind me how much I love books. Once I've cracked the barrier, I find I can read new books with my usual degree of energy.

Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments This triple tag for the March Decathlon challenge has me wanting to read so many books right now! So I’ve started a lot of them and then I’ve only finished 1 book because it was a graphic novel (Fight Club 2).

So I’m asking for a little help in deciding which ones to cross off (though the autobiography books I might try to read for March Tag).

tbr that has turned into current reads:

* The Secret Garden (classic and kindle in motion illustration)
* Harry Potter book 3 (illustration) (Instagram group read along)

* The Silmarion by Tolkien (classic and because it’s Lord of the Rings in March)
* The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wild (current read) (classic and reading for St. Patrick’s Day/ Irish author)
* Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland (classic)

* A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf (autobiography)
* Wildflower by Drew Barrymore (audiobook/ kindle)
* The Princess Diariest by Carrie Fisher (audiobook/ kindle)
* Just Kids by Patti Smith (autobiography)

message 17: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3048 comments I have to pick The Secret Garden because that was my mother's favorite movie.
I love classics, so Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Picture of Dorian Grey both look intriguing.
And lastly I'm a Starwars fan so Carrie Fisher biography looks interesting and I like Drew Barrymore. I like alot.
A Room of One's Own is pretty short I think.

So I would cross off Just Kids, The Silmarion (not a LOTR fan), and Harry Potter. But this is based on my reading preferences.

message 18: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4101 comments I agree 100% with Jason.

The Secret Garden is gorgeous, short and charming. It's probably the best for classic. Dorian Grey is also super-cool, though - a 'must re-read sometime soon' for me... So you could get both!

I really want to read the Carrie Fisher book for autobiography this month, but don't think my hold at the library will come through in time. A Room of One's Own is a great idea for a backup.

I'd say not to bother with the Silmarillion unless you're really wanting to read Tolkein at his most academically detailed. I've never managed to get more than 20 pages in and I adore LOTR and The Hobbit!

The others on your list look interesting, but there's only so much time in the day, aye? So I'd cross them off for the March tag, but keep them for other challenges.

Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments Thank you Jason and Kate for the recommendations.

I think I’ll try to finish The Picture of Dorian Grey and The Princess Diarist.
The audiobook for Carrie Fisher is good and I didn’t know that her daughter Billie Lourd also read for the audiobook.

Halfway for both books so hopefully I’ll be able to read some other books I wanted to read this month too.

message 20: by kris (new)

kris Great list! Love the enthusiasm. I, too find myself re-reading old books that I loved during a reading slump - last year I re-read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.

In terms of your current reads, I would also recommend giving The Picture of Dorian Gray a shot for two reasons: one being that I love the book, and two being that it is relatively short so it might be easy to cross off for you.
Good luck!
