Hey, PI's. Look at that! Jan's. half over already! So, I don't think it's too soon to start Feb. pick process. I'd love to run a Valentine themed title (Leslie Meier comes to mind) but then there's a title that caught the eye which I really want to read. Crit said it's low gore, more like a B&W 50's mystery. Sounds intriguing. Then again, we could run a main and side title to please several. Okay, start them coming, PI's. ;-)

Here's the link to vote should you have a time locating the poll. Thought it would show at top of our group page but I must've read that wrong. See if this helps!

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments Also, not a Valentine's Day mystery but has a character named Valentine. Might be classified as a short story, I'm not sure. :-)

The Triangle at Rhodes A Hercule Poirot Mystery by Agatha Christie

The Ghost of Valentine Past (Haunting Danielle #7) by Bobbi Ann Johnson Holmes Love mysteries that takes place at B&B's, mansions type settings and such.

'Til Death Do Us Part A Valentine Mystery Book Four by Jenna Harte A celebrity comes to town mystery.

The Three Coffins (Dr. Gideon Fell, #6) by John Dickson Carr Not sure it's a Feb. theme bound looked intriguing.

This one got a good rating. I know we can't always go by ratings but if it's three stars or less, one can pretty much trust there's a reason for the rating.

zo n

Sounds interesting. #1 in the series is free right now on Amazon so i'd probably end up reading that one first if we picked this book.

No, but I want to. It's set in Maine - my current favorite state for fictional murders! ;-)

I not really familiar with any of the authors, other than Lucy Stone (which are always decent) and Carolyn Hart, a series I like and a book I think I already have! Deadly Valentine gets my vote for now, but anything with "chocolate" in the title is always a good idea!

Nice assortment, PI's. Thanks bunches!! A few more and we can start to whittle down our picks. Q - Should we do a main title and a side read or just a main title? What say you, PI's?

message 13: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I'm good with both main and side!

I'm in for a main and side read. More choices, more participation. Ye-es!

When we vote, let's note pick for main title and pick for side read. How's that, PI's? :-)

A few more titles before we vote? That okay, PI's?

How about on the 20th we have all our noms in? Say by early eve.

message 17: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments Sounds good, Tina! :-)

message 18: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments Main and side for me too. With the wether usually rainy in February its a perfect time to hunker down with a good book or two...or 10 lol.

I have a couple suggestions:

Murder in the Paperback Parlor (Book Retreat Mysteries, #2) by Ellery Adams

This Old Homicide (A Fixer-Upper Mystery, #2) by Kate Carlisle

A Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell

I am really interested in that last one, the plot is nit something we see too much of.

I agree, Kaya!

Thanks, Nicole!

Sounds good, Allison.

We've a job on our hands, PI's. But we got this. ;-)

To pare it down some, after all title noms are in, how 'bout tomorrow, everyone picks one main and one side title then we can vote on those left standing. ;-)

Thankyew, Nicole. We'll take it, Pghfan. ;-)

Last call on titles, PI's. I'm a little short on time today so will get a poll question setup tomorrow. If someone has the chops to do it, feel free. If no, that's okay too! ;-)

Unfortunately, I think I'll have to pull Three Coffins (heartbroken as it's s'pose to be a locked room mystery to beat all others) and is hard to locate, is expensive and not in e-book...if someone finds it in e-format please let me know! I'd read it on my own. Pghfan, seems one to fit classics category) as it's an older publication. Nuts! The author is s'pose to be a master at this sub-genre.

PI's, votes are about in. Should we have a tie, just run one title as main read, one as side? If tie is broken, run title with most votes as main read and next popular as side read? Or vote on side read from all the titles that had at least one vote? You decide.

If no one votes on this, we'll just run the first option.

message 30: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments Well im thinking the one with the most votes should be main read and next highest the side read. If a tie then we could just assign one as the main and one the side, if we`re reading both then i don't think it matters :)

message 31: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments I just realized that at least 2 of our PI's have read Murder in the Paperback Parlor should we remove it as a choice? It is currently tied for being 1 of our reads this month.

I agree with the top vote being the main and the second place being the side read. If there is a tie, we can pick one as the main and one as the side. I've not read either of the top two, so I'll be on board with one of them.

message 34: by PugMom (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I haven't read the one which would be a re-read for the others so I'm good with whatever is chosen!

message 35: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
Good! That's solved. Thanks for the quick replies, PI's. Easy to move forward.

I've read Paperback Parlor and probably won't re-read it but I won't spoil it for those who haven't and those who wish to re-read it. But no biggie, the majority wins and the two titles tied shall stay. Just which one comes first and which one is side read? We'll figure it out.

As noted late 2017, I'd a possible fix for books that have been voted in only to have PI's not participate in the read and discuss. If those who voted in title wish to not participate then we've the call to push 2nd title up to selected spot. Hope that makes sense. Is that okay with everyone?

Am I seeing things correctly that Haunting Danielle is the one people HAVEN'T already read, and that that is what we are selecting for a main read?

And Tina, I agree, in principle, that if people aren't joining in on the book they voted for, if it is selected, we can go on to the second place one. Unfortunately, we don't always know this before some people have already got or even started the original selection.

Yes, Haunting Danielle has not been read by anyone in the group that i can tell.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I still wish Goodreads would allow multiple votes in a poll. With only a few people voting it makes it difficult.

I dont know how hard or time consuming it is to put the polls but maybe we could do two? One for the main read and one for tge side? We could just list all the books on both.

message 40: by PugMom (new)

That's the one, Pghfan. We can run Paperback P as a side read...or vice versa if all want PP first and the other 2nd. I have Haunting Danielle/Ghost of Valentine on order and will host if no one else wants to. Main or side...doesn't matter to me.

True, about the book chat already underway, Pghfan. If it's loaned from library or a freebie, not a big loss but if someone bought the book, then they'd be somewhat out $. Unless they want to read the title on their own. Or, rather than a traditional break down, it can still run more as a side read and the next title can be pushed up to full chapter breakdown and discussion. That might help. It won't be perfect but a somewhat fair way to handle no shows.

I thought about that, Allison, but if I got it right, I'd have had to do whole poll over, title by title (you'd think there'd be a way to C&P whole list/poll but I couldn't find one). BUT, if we were able to eliminate the choices that received no votes, that'd make less work. Only thing, one wouldn't be able to vote for those eliminated titles.

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments Please forgive me because I’m somewhat new to the group. I really enjoy participating in the discussions and reading the posts, but I’m a little confused as to why there are random negative and defensive comments, almost hostile. Once again, my apologies because I really don’t mean to offend anyone, but isn’t this just supposed to be a happy book discussion group?
