Back when we were discussing Exposition styles, I flipped through a lot of old books to see what kind of material authors put up at the front. Maps were pretty common (more so in fantasy and science fiction.)

So I had this idea for a quiz. See how many of the following maps from sci-fi/fantasy books can recognize. (You can view an enlarged version by clicking on the map for the "enlarge" link below each map.)

This being the Internet, I won't insult your ability to use Google; you can check your answer to each question by clicking on the spoiler tag below each map.) So no need to post your actual answers.

But you can post how many you recognized:

Results:

9-10 out of 10 => Cartography Wizard
7-8 out of 10 => Scout
6-7 out of 10 => Traveler
4-5 out of 10 => Villager
2-3 out of 10 => Lost
0-1 out of 10 => Visitor from Another Dimension

I score "Lost"....I got Hyboria and Middle Earth.....

Michele | 274 comments Well, I got 3 - #1,#2, and #6 - but there isn't any #7 so I'm going to claim another by default and promote myself to villager :) I should have gotten #4, since I love those books, but it has been a while since my last reread.

Oh also number 3 is tagged by name when you open the larger map, but I won't claim that one also, I'm not greedy (and I'd still be a villager anyways).

Oh, dear, I lost an entire world! (fixed)

Crom, Spooky.... You really are lost. (There's no map of Hyboria in the set. :) (I assume you're on the mobile app and can't check the "spoiler" answers. Sorry about that.)

I guess this is tougher than I expected.

Christy Scarborough | 39 comments I got the first two--Middle Earth was a freebie, I would think, after all the movies. Also knew Pern. I don't read much fantasy, so it didn't surprise me to get so few.

yep, im lost

:)

message 10: by Hillary (new)

Hillary Major | 436 comments Yep, I'm lost too. Missed Pern, though I've read all Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders books, but I got Vorkosigan Saga, which I haven't read although I recognized "Barrayar" from a book title.

message 11: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (cait_coy) Lost for me too. :P Recognized Pern and Middle Earth and that was it. I actually haven't read any of the others yet.

message 12: by Daran (new)

Daran | 73 comments I got Elantris, Vorkosigan Saga, and Middle-Earth

I have never read 3,4, 5, and 7

I was unaware Boneshaker even had a map.

I am Lost.

For what it's worth, the bottom of the list are books we've used as group discussions in the last two years. (Though admittedly "had" is stretching it in the case of #10, which is this month's discussion.)

Daran wrote: "I was unaware Boneshaker even had a map."

Yeah, a map of Seattle from 1879.

I figured #3 would likely be the hardest. Thieve's World was a set of anthologies by multiple authors in a shared world, which was a rarity back in 1978. It was breifly popular and had some role playing game accessories as well, but seems to have faded into obscurity.

Daran | 73 comments After seeing that Boneshaker had a map I went back and looked on my Kindle, and there it was. I had never seen it because it opens up to the first page of Chapter 1, but was there after I paged back a couple of times.

Does anyone else's Kindle do that. If I'm reading on my tablet it starts at the cover, but the Kindle always opens to the beginning of the first chapter.

Timothy Michael Lewis (timothymichaellewis) | 48 comments There is a setting in the mobi/ePub file which tells you the default page to open on. I think the iPad kindle app ignores it, hence the difference..

I would sell Haga to a slayer such as you?
