For 2017 I would say the best were:

Read a debut novel Rules of Civility

Read a book that is set more than 5000 miles from your location. A Gentleman in Moscow

Read a book about war. Slaughterhouse-Five (also for Banned or Challenged, though I don't double dip)

Read a YA or middle grade novel by an author who identifies as LGBTQ+. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Read a classic by an author of color. Go Tell It on the Mountain

Book I've read before : Doomsday Book.
Book about war : Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution.
Nonfiction book about technology : Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary.
Banned or frequently challenged book : The Lottery and Other Stories.
Book about sports : Mermaid Queen: The Spectacular True Story Of Annette Kellerman, Who Swam Her Way To Fame, Fortune Swimsuit History!.
All pov characters are poc : Book of a Thousand Days.
