Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments OK, completely out of my depth with this one, so I am going to leave it to Wiki:

'Marlon Williams (born 31 December 1990) is an award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist from Lyttelton, New Zealand. He has performed solo as well as with current backing group the Yarra Benders (Imogen porter, Troy Davis and Kyle Reid ). He first came to attention as front-man of The Unfaithful Ways and has also performed and recorded as a duo with Delaney Davidson. Williams' music style straddles folk, country, bluegrass and the blues'.

As far as I can work out, there's about 8 or so album's worth to choose from, but I am sure Val will keep us right on that.

Noms close Sunday 10 pm, but you knew that anyway.

We only have another 4 artists left to go, I will add another one but it looks like we have fallen on hard times. If you want the game to continue, best get adding some more pdq:

Nearly the weekend again gang, I think I only have 10 bands to catch this weekend so it's a reasonably quiet one for me, hope you all have something exciting to do.

Val H. | 22162 comments Thanks Spacepig.

I don't have much to add. I first came across him as a support act about two years ago. I was really keen to see Sweet Jean and they turned out to be boring as batshit but both my daughter and I agreed that the young bloke up first had a good voice and a mesmerising stage presence. Easy on the eye too! I'm only aware of two albums - 2015's self-titled album which I bought after seeing him and this year's "Make Way for Love" which I have had on repeat in the car. I'm on his mailing list and get very funny emails from him (I do like a sense of humour) and I'm seeing him as a headliner next month (show sold out almost immediately). The new album is very moody (it IS a break-up album) - there's hints of Roy Orbison and Ryan Adams there and also a bit of a western (cowboy) flavour. I love the production - it was recorded in North California with producer Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart). One review (a 4 and a half star review) compared the two albums as follows:

"The most major shift between the two collections is the completely recalibrated musical focus: where on his debut Williams favoured the alt-country realms with flourishes of bluegrass, blues and folk, he's now gone completely and unreservedly into '60s crooner mode, as if he filed away his Gram Parsons and The Byrds records and pulled out a slew of Roy Orbison and Jim Reeves platters in their place."

That may assist posters in choosing a nomination. Apart from the fact I like him, I chose him because there seemed to be a reasonable amount of clips on YouTube - not always true for Antipodean artists. I think both albums are also on BandCamp should folk want to use that.

I know many posters are unwilling to try anything new - almost 20 nominations for my current theme as opposed to a mere 8 for Clifford T. Ward - but hopefully a few of you may find something to try.

So kicking off with:

As always, can someone please tell me if this works. I think there are another couple of clips of this track.

Fully clothed he's the goods! A bit like my fixation with Dwight Yoakam, I don't care what is (or rather what's not) under his hat. As long as he does that knee-swivel thing, I'm sold. Marlon has a similar charisma on stage.

The new album "Make Way for Love" was written following the difficult break-up with his girlfriend, Aldous Harding.

Ah ha! That came up when I looked up Aldous's latest on Zon. They do a duet on there too (but I preferred this folk tune), so hopefully working professionally together wouldn't be impossible sometime.

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments My most sincere apologies, Val, but my flippin' Laptop is on the fritz once again and I can barely manage to post anything at all or check out my Inbox between Pages freezing and shutting down on me virtually every couple of minutes. I've done 6 Restarts already just in the last half hour ;o<

I have been unable to use YouTube for days and I can't contribute to either nominate or to vote on any Playlists until I get Internet Explorer uninstalled and then reinstalled AGAIN!!! ... GRRR!!!

message 18: by Spacepig (new)

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments Eight noms it is then for Val's latest suggestion, Marlon Williams, meaning we will be using the 3 point scoring system this week.

Voting closes, as ever, at 10 pm on Thursday evening, I think I should be here at that time, but I have lot track a bit of the upcoming gigs so best just wait and see.

No worries Suzy! I know the frustration of technology spitting the dummy just when you want to use it. Time for the chamomile tea and some shut eye - that'll fix the damn 'puter!

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments Sorry for the late finish tonight, on the spur of the moment a metal musician friend decided to enter a singer/songwriter open mic night so I went along to support. Think that's the beginning and the end of his singer/songwriter career :-)

A draw this week, but by virtue of the most first place scores garnered, our winning nom, I Know A Jeweller, nominated by SussexWelsh. Tech comes a close second with Dark Child, and bronze this week belongs to Brass Neck, just one point behind with What's Chasing You.

Good to see some of you enjoying this one, have to admit, I found it too hard going for me :-(

Craig White | 6727 comments jolly good, sussex and brass, but particularly, me! :) that was a worthwhile excercise, call me nuts, but i could hear shadows of antony (anohni) and morrissey at certain junctures! ok, you're nuts! :)

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments YAYYY!!! - Congratulations Sussex ... x

And very well nominated tech and Mr B ... x x

My very first thought was that there was a very warm and welcome whisper of Johnny Cash to Marlon's voice ;o>

If you're at all keen Suzy, I have a spare copy of the new album, "Make Way For Love", which features your 2nd and 3rd choices on it. I'd be happy to send it to you. I pre-ordered the album from Bandcamp as soon as they announced it, waited for weeks before enquiring, "No, It's shipping from Indiana(!)", they said (he only lives down the road!), "Give it another couple of weeks". Waited patiently but still no CD (yes, I did have the automatic download but I had paid for the hard copy). Enquired again, "Oh, sorry," they said, "it got stalled in our shipping department. We'll send another one right away." A couple of days later, CD arrives in the post. "Wow, that was quick," I thought, then realised it was probably the original order (must have come by pony and trap). Then, on Wednesday, the second copy turned up. So I have a spare copy, still sealed, if you would like it.

suzysunshine7 | 16045 comments Awww, that's very kind of you, Val. I'm guessing though that it would cost more to post on from Australia to the UK than the CD costs to buy? ;o>

message 34: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22162 comments Hopefully not as much as that. It's your call but the CD is sitting on my kitchen table doing nothing.

Suzy, check here - https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/au... - scroll down to page 30. If a CD could be sent as an Economy Air Letter (max weight 250g), it would cost 9 AUD (about £5.29). :-)

Thanks Tim! ... x ... I did try to take a quick Google earlier and found something rather vague that suggested that it might be around £8 to £9 which got me wondering if it was worth Val's time in posting it on.

Whatever it costs in p&p though it's coming from our Val - and I like the idea of that as much as I'm looking forward to the CD! - because it feels a lot more friendly and personal than buying it off a Seller ;o>

We have a few of those Pony Traps still very much in use around here, Val, and I love to see them out and about. One is the Rag & Bone Man, another is a Girl that does Shop deliveries locally, and of course we have our magnificent Robinson's Brewery Shire Horses that pull the Cart that takes the new Barrels from the Brewery around to all the various Pubs in Stockport too ;o>

There was a lady from a neighbouring village who had a small trap drawn by a miniature pony. Very cute. Not seen her around for years now, so no idea if she's still alive.
