Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments The fiance and I went to see this last weekend, and I though'd I'd see if anyone else here has gone to see it. It's a popular book around here, and we've definitely chatted before the movie came out about it.

I don't want to give spoilers, but I enjoyed the movie as a COMPLETELY SEPARATE ENTITY from the book. But honestly- the movie was SSSSSOOOO DIFFERENT. The challenges were different, the key/gate system was different, when the characters are revealed, how they meet, it seemed as EVERYTHING was changed to "better fit the screen".

Anyone else dared to see the movie?

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I saw the movie a few weeks ago and I really liked it! I'll be honest, I don't remember book details very well (I apparently store those in the short term part of my brain) but it seemed very different to me!

Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. My friend and I totally geeked out over all of the 80's references, and i just had a smile on my face the whole time.

Michelle (MichelleBookAddict) (michellebookaddict) | 186 comments I so want to see this movie in the theaters!! Maybe tonight... this weekend is pretty booked though with an Angels Baseball game and then the LA Times Book Fest... but I so want to see this movie. Thanks for not giving away spoilers. I did have a feeling that the movie wouldn’t be 100% like the book what with Iron Giant in the commercials.
Hopefully I can get around to seeing this movie, Avengers and the Han Solo movie.

annapi | 5505 comments I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect I'll enjoy it since I read the book so long ago I don't remember details about it anymore!

KateNZ | 4100 comments I dragged my husband to this over Easter and we both really enjoyed it. He hasn’t read the book, and I have (twice, with glee, and counting ...).

I didn’t care that there were story changes because they weren’t gratuitous- translating the story into a 2 hour screen production took some doing. The spirit was right, the characters were right (Mark Rylance, yay!) and it was a whole roller coaster ride of fun.

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments My family saw it and and agree with you Joi. If you consider the movie as inspired by the book and do not expect it to be the same, it was really good and lots of fun.

Susie I really want to see it at the cinema rather than at home but I’m unsure if I’ll get a chance. My life is too busy!

Interesting... I was looking forward to it, but now I'm unsure.

Amy | 12916 comments My illiterate oldest read the book, so I am going to take him. Even though they are different, I wonder if seeing a good movie will help him appreciate a good story more. Now he’s reading Hunger Games.

Kaitlyn (katibruneau) Seems this may be an unpopular opinion here but I really did not enjoy the movie. I had read the book right before seeing it so maybe my hopes were a bit too high. I understood and liked some of the changes they made, which leant itself more to the movie format. But, there were other aspects that I felt were really lacking. Even as a standalone movie (as if I had not read the book) I don't know if i would have enjoyed it. It felt choppy and a little unrealistic (not because of the scifi aspect but more in how it jumped from one thing to the next and other things were accomplished quite easily.) Maybe I will have to watch it again in a few years when my memory of the book isn't so fresh.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I think we are going to go see the movie today. It seems like something that would be good on the big screen. It's been so long since I read the book that I won't be able to make detailed comparisons which sounds like a good thing.

Ditto

Nicole D. | 1573 comments saw it loved it. Didn't remember the book, but I love watching people play video games.

I also LOVED the nod to Excalibur, which probably a lot of people didn't "get" and I'm sure there were a number of Easter Eggs I didn't catch.

Karin | 9218 comments Since it's been some time since I read the book, it sounds like I'll enjoy the movie, but I plan to wait until it's on video even if it would be better on the large screen.

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I really enjoyed the movie, even though it's SOOOOO different from the book. I looked that Alan Silvestri did the music because he did the music to Back to the Future and any time BttF was mentioned, he threw a little bit of a nod that way. It made my nerdy heart happy, lol.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I liked the movie — some of the special effects were amazing. It did make me want to read the book again, but I will wait a bit. It had been so long since I read the book, the differences were not completely apparent to me.

Patricia Evans (pvevans) | 1 comments I just saw the movie and loved it. I actually came on here to see the reviews on the book as I have never read it before. I'm not really a movie person, I'm more of a book person. But my husband forced me and the kids to sit down and watch it. I woudl honestly watch it again (which is very rare for me). I'm now hesitant to read the book, I don't want the book to ruin the movie for me... which again is a very alien thing for me to say.. it's usually the other way around.
