Eleanor Oliphant is our October book and The Hate U Give us up for December. Looking forward to some compelling discussion.

Lisa | 26 comments Thank you so much for continuing to stick with us and facilitate our choices and discussions! I know it can seem unrewarding sometimes when a book doesn't seem to generate much discussion. I read Eleanor earlier this year for my IRL book club, and I do think the discussion will be quite active! It may be one of the best books I've read this year!

Looking forward to both discussions myself

Katie | 6 comments I'm hoping to be more active around here going forward, so I'm going to start reading The Hate U Give now so I can maybe be finished with it by December! I am such a slow reader (I prefer to relax by knitting and I don't like audiobooks), but I really need to get back into adult books after 4 years of nothing but picture books and Vogue!

Lol Katie, I remember that era. I can still recite Go Dog Go by heart and my baby is 19. You might want to give the audio for this one a try, I liked the reader a lot, and I think it would mesh with knitting.

My problem with audiobooks is generally less the audiobook/narrator and more with my inability to focus on the book. If I start to get tired or space out with a book in my hand, I end up reading the same passage over and over and that's my signal to put the bookmark in and do something else; with audiobooks, though, I lose focus and a half hour later I realize I haven't been listening, but I have no idea where I stopped listening so I can't back up. (if anyone has tricks to deal with this, I'd love to hear them!)

Maybe I'll try a few audiobooks from the library and see if I can train myself, if not to focus then at least to realize when I am slipping so I can turn off the audio before I lose my place. :)

I have definitely done that myself. I have to have a really good reader to make audio work for me. It keeps me focused. And I can't just sit and listen -- I mostly listen while I drive. Focusing is harder for me when I am in my house where there are distractions. I don't like to knit (I tried!) but I always thought it would be a good accompaniment to audiobooks. If you read YA that is a good place to start -- the stories are so much less complicated than books for adults and that makes them easier to follow. A sweet romance can also be great.
