Interesting breakdown with the male vs female writers.

One of my goals for the year was to read more female authors than male. The count includes all books read not just for this challenge. This year will be the first time I actually read more females and it has been a very pleasant experience.

I did a quick count and to this point just for 2018 I'm 43/155 with female writers. That's without a conscious effort either way.

Huh, just for kicks I ran mine too. 58/98 female writers. Although 30 of those books are split between Kate Daniels, Women of the Otherworld, and Morganville.

6 of the 7 multiple author books are Kate Daniels since it’s the wife/husband duo.

This is my progression since I joined GoodReads. Pretty obvious that my unconscious reading heavily favored male authors. Would have a long way to go if I ever attempted to balance it out.

Interesting numbers. I tend to read more women authors outside of fantasy simply because a lot of the ones in fantasy write either PNR or YA. Of the ones I did read this year, and this is including a few I'll finish up before the end of the year, 8 will be Marissa Meyer (YA), 4 Sherwood Smith (epic borderline GD), 2 Madeline Miller (Mythology), 3 Robin Hobb (Epic/GD) and the rest are all one off authors in either YA, Urban Fantasy or Historical Fiction.

I think there are a bunch of women writing epic fantasy but the trouble I’m having is a lot aren’t getting audiobooks. Janny Wurts, Kate Elliott and Michelle West all have huge series that I want to read but there are no audiobooks for them. I’m really into Courtney Schaefer’s Whitefire Crossing too but the last book is only out in kindle so it’s holding me up.

I really love the idea of trying to balance out the male authors and female authors. I might have to try that as one of my reading goals next year.

I think this is a bit out of wack for me though and I have the same thing going on as Niki - a lot of series with short installments by female authors so I go through them faster.
I did notice that most of the female fantasy authors I've read this year have been urban fantasy.

That’s interesting that you’ve almost flipped from last year. If I had to guess off the top of my head I would say I read more longer series by men but it turns out that outside of Discworld where I read 22 books most of my longer series were by women.

I usually try to get at least part of a series from the library especially if it isn't a newer series so that's why I haven't taken on any of those authors.
