Hello everyone and welcome to the October 2018 edition of SCPL’s Online Nonfiction book club! My name is Marcella, and I will be leading this month’s discussion. This month we’ll be reading The Man Who Caught the Storm: The Life of Legendary Tornado Chaser Tim Samaras.
If you have anything ranging from a mild interest to a strong obsession in severe weather, this book is a great read. Tornadoes and hurricanes are phenomenons that we in Ontario experience intermittently but in the United States, particularly in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, eastern Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota, tornadoes are an ever-present reality throughout an entire season of the year.
And then there are those who chase tornadoes! Tim Samaras, a self-taught chaser with an academic history that ended in high school, was one of the most prominent and esteemed of that unique group. Brantley Hargrove does an excellent job depicting Tim's fascination with severe weather and his dedication to discovering the tornado's secrets for the future safety of those who live in the funnel's path.
The book is available from the Library in several different formats, all of which are accessible at the following link: https://bit.ly/2xSG9uq. If you have the chance to listen to the audiobook, I really recommend it - the narration is excellent!
I’m looking forward to reading this book with you and discussing your thoughts and reactions!
