Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments *throws away under construction sign*

After having felt over-burdened at points in 2018 by my own planning and having sometimes been slightly wearied by (again my own) monthly themes, I’ve come up with a different method this time.

For most months, I’m assigning 3 regular book slots, and one bonus slot for buddy reads, group reads, spontaneous additions, when I just have time for more, and so forth.

So I made myself

a must-read shelf for 12 books, one per month: here
a tbr-jar for the 2019 TBR-Jar-Randomizer Challenge (which will also come to include all books bought in 2019): here
a short reads stack for February – short month, short reads: here
a Serial-Reader-Challenge -Shelf: here
a shelf for Subabbau-Punkte-Challenge (point & theme based): here

Aha! Man, that's going to be the 3rd time I'll be changing my 2019-TBR! lol
I think I would rather start the series in April though, seeing that the first quarter will be all about books made to movies and though they have been planning to make a movie of of Mistborn, it won't be coming out in 2019...
But that is, if it fits your reading schedule of course! Just let me know.

Interesting - Sanderson himself suggests this, which would make starting with Mistborn right for me ;-)

Yes, I saw that too but didn't find it very useful cause the only recommendation he makes is that we start with the first book of a series and not the second one, I mean duh!
Other than that he says you can read it in any order, which doesn't help my indecisiveness lol.
With the chart I can see that Mistborn is a good start and what to read after the 7 primary Mistborn books. (yup already making plans for 2020 hahahaha)

Excuse me but I'm eavesdropping on your conversation about the reading order of BSanderson's Cosmere books.
Initially, I thought I might read Elantris in March then join the two of you in April, bbbuuutttt... Elantris is 622 pgs (I had it confused with The Emperor's Soul novella which is 175 pgs.

On a different tangent, I read The Farseer Trilogy this year, Auntie Terror, and really loved it.
I'll be reading The Liveship Traders in 2019--do you plan to continue with Hobb's Realm of the Elderings series?

message 20: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments @oshizu: Pity you might not make it for April - if you manage to plow through Elantris quickly, please feel free to give us a shout. The more, the merrier :-)
As for Robin Hobb: If I like the Assassin's Apprentice, then yes, definitely.

I went through my 2019 TBRs this morning and deleted enough books to make room for the Mistborn Trilogy, so I'll be joining you for that. *pumps fist

You'd mentioned above that you're looking for short books, too?
(So we can balance our reading of the long books!)
Hobb's Farseer Trilogy has a prequel, The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince, which runs 160-175 pages.
The Assassin's Apprentice begins with an unexplained premise about Wit magic (communicating with beasts). The prequel has a minstrel narrate the tale of a Farseer ancestor to explain why.

*coughs (Does that "Ehh" express disdain or disappointment? lol)

Have you two decided what order to read the Cosmere series?
Will you be including Elantris, The Emperor's Soul, Warbreaker, and Storm Archive #1 before Alloy of Law?
I'll read in any order the two of you decide.

message 24: by oshizu (last edited Dec 03, 2018 11:12AM) (new)

oshizu | 5762 comments By the way, here's a rough approximation of the page counts for the series.
MB1 The Final Empire, 541 pgs
MB2 The Well of Ascension, 590 pgs
MB3 The Hero of Age, 572 pgs
MB3.5 Mistborn: The Secret History, 160
EL2 The Emperor's Soul, 175 pgs
(Stormlight Archive #1: Way of Kings, 1001 pgs.. Ok, scratch this one for 2019)
EL1 Elantris, 662 pgs
(WB1 Warbreaker, 669 pgs: will read this on my own later)
MB4 The Alloy of Law, 333 pgs (sigh of relief!)
MB5 Shadows of Self, 385 pgs
MB6 Bands of Mourning, 448 pgs

I guess my question is whether we'll be reading Mistborn 3.5 and Elantris #1-#2?
Sorry to clutter your Member's Corner space, Auntie Terror.
Should we go clutter up the Buddy Reads thread instead?

message 25: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments So you'd suggest I shove the Piebald Prince into February (my short reads month) or any point before May, right? *makes notes*

Glad you join us for Sanderson. So far I've made no plans beyond The Fallen Empire - I'll have yet to decide whether I like his writing. And I'm slightly afraid because he, too, is a hyped author in the fantasy area - which doesn't always go well for me (example: GRRM).

oshizu | 5762 comments Yes, I do. And since The Piebald Prince is short, you can also think about how you like Robin Hobb's narrative style and plot.
I read the existing volumes of GRRM's Song and Ice last year at a friend's recommendation but never watched the TV series. I prefer Hobb's books.

I've never read anything by Sanderson before, either, but I keep seeing Mistborn in online articles about "The Best Fantasy Series," lol.

Feel absolutely free to ;-)

Just read Das Schloss (Eye Classics) by David Zane Mairowitz : great graphic novel adaptation of Kafka's famously unfinished novel of the same name. I won't count this to my aim here, but I'll use it in one of my challenges for points. :-D

oshizu | 5762 comments Hello!
I'm very impressed at how you've organized your monthly reads, choosing one or more books from various challenges/goals for every month!
Looks like you will definitely be increasing your 2019 personal challenge, though. It's only early March and you're almost halfway done already!

This year, I impetuously signed up for every yearly challenge this group offers. This is the last time I'll ever do this! It's led me to choose some very light reads just to finish some of the prompts, haha.

Looking forward to April when we start readng Sanderson's The Final Empire together! I've never read any of his books yet....

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments It is amazing how annoying and hampering it can be when you break up with your live-in partner, and they just don't get up and move out within one month of break-up...

Thus, not much achieved in Augst. But I can at least claim:
40/36 books read, and one audiobook dumped in boredom.

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments My ex is finally getting a move on and promised to be out of my flat by the end of the week. September still didn't go too well because I'm still not at peace again due to him bumming about here in the evenings.

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments So, as it is December 31st, it's time for a summary, I guess.

Personally, the second half of this year was somewhat difficult for me as I ended my relationship of almost 6 years and had to cope with having to live with them for two more months in one flat. And then somewhat refurbish my flat and find my feet again and stuff. That had a bigger impact on my reading than I thought it would. But:

I've finished 52 books in 2019.
I completed by goals for the TBR Jar Challenge, the Genre Bingo Challenge, the Serial Reader Challenge and got 196 points at the SuBAP-Challenge.
And I've met new and stayed in contact with acquainted readers on here, found new books and authors and enjoyed myself inside books a lot.

So thanks to all my Goodreads friends, contacts and tbr twins, and everybody else on here - hope you have a great New Year's Eve tonight and an even better 2020.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere
And gie’s a hand o’ thine... ;-)
