Jim | 21809 comments The question I have to ask myself is how well promotion works on books that people have to pay for?

message 702: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments That may need another experiment. There don't seem to be many advertising sites for anything other than free or discounted books

message 703: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I've noticed that,and I wonder if frankly it doesn't pay

message 704: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments The latest update: sales are falling, but at least one person is actually reading it. Woo! Woo!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You tease.

Where the blog then?

message 706: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments I can see it. Link not working?

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Today's update. The five day giveaway is nearly over and we are tantalisingly close to 4,000. It's currently 3,988 plus an unknown number of kindle unlimited downloads.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

message 708: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Damn. I want 4000!

message 709: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Yes, that would be nice. Mind you, I'd like people to go on and buy the other books that aren't free instead!

New book coming out on the 24th. That's the next project.

message 710: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments An update plus a picture of a fit bloke in his undercrackers.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The picture better not disappoint me, buddyboy.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The snowball was more exciting.

Sheesh

message 713: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Well, he didn't do much for me either. But judging by the books around mine (and your comment about gagging) it seems that some folks like that kind of stuff.

Now there's a funny thought. The internet was largely invented so that men could look at porn. Kindles seem to be there so that women can read porn.

Naturally, I generalise for comic effect, but there's something in it. So to speak.

message 714: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Men aren't interested in looking at naked women anymore, Will.

Ask Playboy.

message 715: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments I think it's more that men like their women to move a little. The static pictures in Penthouse can't compete with the internet.

"Are you all right, Cecily? Have I hurt you?"

"I'm fine, Roger. Why do you ask?"

"Well, you moved..."

message 716: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Static pictures.

Where you rub them against your hair and stick them to a wall.

Sorry, sometimes my brain takes me to odd and wonderful places.

message 717: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Sorry, apologies, grovels ...

I have a new book coming out today, so I need to do that horrible authorly "buy my book" thing. All my British instincts are to hide in a corner and cough politely, but I know I ought to be coming over all American, leaping on tables and shouting "Look at me! Look at me! Ain't I fabulous?"

So here's a blog about my new book. If you don't like that sort of promotional thing, then feel free not to click. I won't be the least bit offended.

Hope it goes well for you.

message 719: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Thanks! It feels awkward but I know I've got to do it. Sorry, world.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments If your product is good, it's only fair to tell people. Imagine if Charles Dickens had tucked his tomes under the mattress!

And you'll only know for sure if it is good, bad or indifferent if you give us all a chance to find out.

Go tell!

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Best of luck with it, Will.

message 727: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Roast pig.

Mmmmmmmmmm

message 728: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments With apple sauce, spuds roasted until they are crispy and brown on the outside, a hearty cider, some more cider. Crackling. Soft white pork. Turnips and mashed swede with just a hint of cinnamon.

Proper food. Not this prawn in a puddle nonsense.

message 729: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments That's very close to what I served on Sunday, Will.

Wish there were leftovers!

message 730: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Cold roast pork and apple sauce goes very well in a sandwich the next day. If there any leftovers!

message 731: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments There wasn't a crumb of pork left. :(

message 732: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments That sounds like a good excuse to buy some more.

message 733: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Got one left in the freezer. Hopefully I'll room in the bags for more at Christmas.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Great Britain has won the Davis Cup! Hip hip hooray.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I recall some Dutch company doing the same sort of thing and the backlash almost put them out of business. As it should.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Toenails blog coming soon, eh?

message 742: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Reminds me of a suppertime joke ...

"I helped Mummy make the pastry. Just look how clean it got my hands!"

message 743: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Reminds me of watching people on the street in Kampala and Nairobi making chapati on huge tawa. They'd have a bucket of filthy water next to them that they'd continually dip their hands into.

It's really no wonder we had the shits for three years.

message 744: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments I love the idea of street food, but the reality can be much less appealing.

In the late 80s I had a spell working on international aviation security. Part of my job was to send a team of security experts around the world testing airport security. These experts went everywhere that a British airline flies to, which is pretty much everywhere.

One of the experts was notorious for never trying the local food. He would go to all these exotic places and insist on eating at Macdonalds, burger king, pizza hut, etc. The only exception he would make would be to eat at good quality hotel restaurant or an italian restaurant.

I asked him once why he didn't take the opportunity to try the local cuisine. His answer was very much what you have said. If you eat at a big chain you know what you are getting and there is a fighting chance that the menu doesn't include food poisoning. I had to admit he had a point.

message 745: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Gawd, I'd love that job. But I'd eat the food.

message 746: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments I went with him on a couple of the trips so I could see what he did. It seemed glamorous at first but it was a lot of hard work. Flight - airport - hotel - flight - airport - home. There was some time to play the tourist but not much.

But, yeah, I would have eaten the local food too. Maybe not the street food though.

message 747: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We ate nothing but street food in south east Asia.

I'd still love that job.

message 748: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments A political one today. What is wrong with admitting that we don't know?
