Innit... When I taught high school, the kids couldn't speak without using that ******* word. I once challenged one to try, and his actual answer was: "Innit, Sir, I can!"

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments HOW MUCH???

I was thinking I'd like to have one if I ever own a piece of dirt, but not at that price!

message 1059: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Yup, that took me by surprise too. I've seen prices as high as £100k for the really swanky pools. That's a lot of money for a lot of nothingness.

Mind you, it's not as expensive as owning a yacht:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/...

It's more expensive than you think to be rich!

I'm sorry. You simply cannot win these. All you will get is blank stares from those you are trying to educate. Loose/loose. Save your time and energy for those you have measurable influence on.

I'm betting on your cooker clock.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Mine is surprisingly well behaved. A friend's has made their milk go chunky.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm going to have to shoe horn the word manspluttering into a conversation.

If we all work together we can get it into common usage in no time.

Jim | 21809 comments Not long after the war, when rationing was about over, my mother donated a plucked and oven ready 'old hen' to a village raffle. (Back then they were welcomed if only to make broth from)
Only to win it back

message 1077: by T4bsF (Call me Flo) (new)

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) When food was still scarce - even winning your own old hen back was probably a bonus, as it was probably hard to give it up for a prize in the first place. By the time I was born in 51 - there was very little still on ration, so I was lucky not to be caught up in it......... well, I say that - but we had our own type of rationing in my family - it was called "lack of funds" !! ;-)

Some pictures - particularly by Dali - are pretty painful Will - all those pointy heads and triangular faces must hurt!! ;-)

It was a dark and stormy night.....
..........the wind was howling wild
When a very angry father stood o'er his trembling child
The child knew he had been naughty and would be sent to bed
For he had ripped the Beano that his Father hadn't read!!! ;-)

More about photography and writing.

Why are there so many darned buttons on my camera? And how can that tell us how to write better stories?

https://willonce.wordpress.com/2017/0...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Lots of phrases don't make sense. They are stragglers and outliers from the wreckage that is out beautiful and battered language. And they add a pleasing air of absurdity to it that only foreigners and writers actually notice.

Thanks for pointing it out.
