Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Posted for ease of reference:

◈ This is a 3 month team challenge starting 1 February 2019 and running until 30 April 2019.

◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Wednesday February 1, 2019 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this
Countdown Clock

◈ Books can be carried over into the next month, as long as they were started after your time on February first. So books started in February and finished in March WILL count for March.

◈ Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

◈ Your finished books need to be on your UNO shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count. Please add them to your shelf only after finishing the book. Make sure the dates are correct and within the time limit.

◈ If you want to reread a book you can not have read it within the last 6 months.

◈ Please make notes IN THIS THREAD of how your book may count. The more options we have the better!

◈ Jenny, Nikk, and I will keep track of all the possible options and shuffle around cards as needed so it's really important that you give us as much information as possible for each book you read.

◈ This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots, and make new friends :D

(view spoiler)

For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

UNO FAQs. Please let your captains know if the answer to your question is not here.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Welcome everyone! I'm looking forward to playing with everyone.

That's no problem Karla :D Prettyi and Desieree look like they are going to be first time players as well. As soon as they check into the group we'll talk about how to start planning for February.

First though everyone has to have a dedicated bookshelf on their account to play UNO. You can see mine, Jenny's, and Nikk's linked above. So please make one and link it here for us :D Second, it is a good idea to go ahead and friend everyone on our team. This will make it easier to find out if your books work for reverse cards

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Welcome everyone! Now that we have everyone here, lets get into the good stuff:

IMPORTANT: Our UNO strategy. PLEASE READ ME.

So this is how my team kept track of what everyone was reading last year and it was really helpful for putting the books into the spreadsheet. Basically everyone will post a comment with their "[insert month here] Reading Plan." You'll just say the books and all of the cards that work for each one (see my comment below).

The plan is not set in stone so don't worry if all you have is the first book you plan on reading. As the month progresses everyone will go back to their original comment to edit, add, and remove books. They will also post the date they finished the book (information we must have for the spreadsheet).

It is very important you list all of the cards your book can work for, not just for the one you've decided to read it for. The more information we have on each book the easier it is to shift and cover all the cards, especially during the end of the month scramble. It is perfectly fine if your book only has one or two cards as a "to-read" and then you add the rest when the book is completed.

This way everyone's books and cards are in one place (instead of scattered throughout our chatting) and this will make things super easy for the captains to fill in the spreadsheet. (I'm also a little bit of an organizational freak, sorry *^.^*)

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments For February we have the following color cards:

3 Green - Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi - Author: Helen - Preeti - Read: 20
5 green - Atonement by Ian McEwan - Author: Ian - Pretti - Read: 17
5 red - Indelible (Grant County, #4) by Karin Slaughter - Title: Indelible - Karla - Read: 18
6 blue - Us Against You (Beartown, #2) by Fredrik Backman - Jenny - Location: Sweden - Read: 19
8 red - The Marrying of Chani Kaufman by Eve Harris - Author: Eve - Preeti - read: 3
9 yellow - The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht - Character: Natalia - Preeti - Read: 23
9 yellow - Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt - Author: Natalie - Megan - Read: 10

Wild draw 4
1. 6 Blue - The Night Watch by Sarah Waters - Author: Sarah - Preeti - read: 14
2. 8 Red - The First Deadly Sin (The Edward X. Delaney Series Book 1) by Lawrence Sanders - Character: Edward - Caroline - Read: 21
3. 3 green - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Character: Hugo - Megan - read: 21

For our new players this means that your book must have a cover that is >50% of the required color and works for the number.

We also have 3 Wild Draw 4 cards. This means that we have to do three of the above colored cards twice.

As I said above, your reading plan is not set in stone. However, if you have a book that works for a colored card, please keep in mind that finishing that book should be a reading priority as these are often our hardest cards to fill.

I will keep track of our color cards in this post.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Last thing for now, for our new players:

Mini-challenges are a part of UNO that start around the middle of each month as a way to pick up extra points. They take a variety of different forms. Books we read will be able to count for one UNO card and one mini-challenge point each. When they let captains know what the Feb one is I'll pass it along.

Also, mini-challenges usually have their own countdown start - generally 5PM AST between the 13th and 15th. So only books started after that will work for the mini-challenge

Mini-challenges are really the thing that sets teams apart so it is very important to be proactive about them. We will given a few days to plan in advance of the mini part starting, so its important to be checking in at least twice a week here while playing UNO. Thanks!

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Yes it's called tineye

http://labs.tineye.com/color/

If it's 50% or more it counts. If, however, you think tineye is wrong (which it sometimes is) post your cover in this thread. We can either agree or disagree in our group, or our captain can post in the captain's thread for comment.

When you set up your February Month Books post, you can add books by clicking on the "add book/author" in the upper right hand corner of the post. Then enter the name of your book, and search for the cover you are reading.

Nikk/Caroline - any other tips?

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Oh yea the app sucks. When I use GR on my phone I open up the real site via the web browser. The app is atrocious. On the real site you'll see the button Jenny is talking about really easily. That also explains why you couldnt link your shelf either as the app makes that impossible to do as well ><

Perfect pointing this out. Everyone needs to friend every one else in our group which will make finding the reverse cards easiest. Megan, all of your books so far work for reverse.

The poor reverse card gets so overlooked :O

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Also a point about location: it is generally the hardest criteria to hit because the mods are so specific about it.

A good example would be Eat, Pray, Love. Megan listed it as working for 5: location - Italy. Which makes sense, and I think most reading groups would accept it, but it doesn't work for us for two reasons.

One, large parts of the book are also in India and Bali, which means that Italy is not the primary location of the book.

Two, the book summary clearly says that the author is specifically in Rome so the location would be Rome, not Italy.

You can only use the country/state/territory (etc) if it is completely unspecified where in that larger space the book actually is OR the book legitimately takes place in two smaller primary locations within a larger space. The Song of Achilles is a good example of that - Troy would not be the primary location because a good quarter of the book takes place in Phthia. This makes the location (for our purposes) Greece.

These things generally keep location from being as usable as it would otherwise be. Of course still look and list location when looking for cards, but just be careful about it. This is important because if we had used Eat, Pray, Love for card 5 and a mod decided they didn't like it we wouldn't know until AFTER points were done at the end of the month when the mods check the spreadsheet.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Hi everyone! My daughter got me a new computer but I am having a heck of a time trying to get my cover colors verified via tineye. So, I will do my best to "eye" them myself but if someone could please verify my colors if we are going to use any of my books to cover color cards that would be great!

Thanks for letting me know, I hadn't realized it needed to be so specific! I'll make the edits from my original reading post

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Sorry I have been a little quiet this week. Work has been crazy busy as I was away last week and I also have a house inspection on Saturday so I am madly cleaning when I get home from work. Thank goodness for audio books so I am getting some reading done whilst working and cleaning. I will be back on deck by Saturday afternoon and well in time for the challenge start

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Hi Karla. Here's a link to your shelf - go ahead and click on it and then you can copy/paste the link yourself in a new message and see if that works.

Yep Karla your books look good. I just need to know the reason your yellow cover works for 9

I verify everyone's colors before adding to the tracking post, so breath easy. I'd add a comment here about "just liking to double check things," but we both know that you've done enough challenges with me to figure out that I'm just controlling xD

:( Im really sorry to hear that Jenny. Let us know if you need anything over the coming weeks/months

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Karla wrote: "I didn’t see a reference to 9 needing a color reason. It just said 9 yellow. If it doesn’t it’s okay."

9 yellow means that the book must work for card number 9 AND have a primarily yellow cover. So my book The First Deadly Sin (The Edward X. Delaney Series Book 1) by Lawrence Sanders is okay for 8 red because it is red AND the main character's name is Edward. But my book wouldnt work for 5 red because it doesn't fit the 5 card

Thanks, Caroline. I was very lucky as I have a membership at the British Library in my hometown and I spent a good couple of hours searching the shelves for the book covers I wanted and then checking them to see if they fit the colour card rules.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Karla wrote: "I I need to change the yellow book cover to a blue, I can. They have both copies available."

That would be fine, except the 6 Blue has already been covered twice so we cannot use it again. Right now the 5 red and one of the 9 yellow cards are still free.

We also need to double one more of our colored cards, which can be any of the ones we have except the 6 blue and 8 red.

I've got your books all updated :) If anything changes with those cards, as they are our most difficult, please let use know ASAP if you do need to drop one (or more) in February. The dropping of books due to Life is generally fine as long as the communication about it is good and fast :D

Megan Are we still needing another Wild Draw 4 card? If so I'll add this to my February list

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Green 3 (Character last name: Hugo)

I'm searching for a yellow book too

Megan I'll read for the second 9 Yellow card we need as well, I believe this should work but if not let me know.
