My name is Diana and I will be leading our discussion for March, focused on the book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.
You may be familiar with this title - not just because it’s a New York Times bestseller, but also because it was mentioned in the news quite a bit last year. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is the true-crime account of the Golden State Killer, who terrorized victims in both Northern and Southern California during the 1970s and 1980s before mysteriously disappearing in 1986. Michelle McNamara, who was married to actor Patton Oswalt, passed away in 2016 while this book was still in progress.
In a bittersweet twist, just 2 months after the book was published posthumously, the Golden State Killer (Joseph DeAngelo) was arrested, after eluding detectives for more than 40 years. This won’t be an easy book for everyone to read, as it does contain graphic and disturbing content. However, I am hoping there are some fellow true crime fans out there who will find this story every bit as compelling as I did.
I look forward to an interesting and thought-provoking conversation this month! While I will post a variety of discussion topics, please feel free to post your own topics and share your thoughts at any time!
