Foundation by Isaac Asimov is our New School read for April 2019.

This is the No Spoiler Thread
The Spoiler Thread will open April 1st

This early posting of the No Spoiler thread is to discuss any non-plot issues pertaining to the book.

Appropriate Posts can contain:
1. Information about the author.
2. Compare editions/translations.
3. Any historical or background information
4. Are you familiar with this author’s work? Do you have any expectations going into the book?
5. What made you decide to read this book?
6. Any fan fiction that you have read or would like to read? Just link the books.
7. If you loved the book and want others to share in that experience, use this thread to motivate others, again save plot specifics for the Spoiler thread
8. If you hated the book, it would be best to keep that for the spoiler page

The most important thing to remember is no plot discussion. Any post that contains plot information or spoilers will be deleted.

Luke (korrick) The only experience I've had with Asimov was the Will Smith film of 'I, Robot', so I'm looking forward to this. It's also going to be my first group read here.

Pink | 5491 comments I really enjoyed his book I, Robot. I liked the film too, but found them quite different.

Unfortunately my library doesn’t have a copy of this one. It has other later books from the foundation series, but not the first! I’ll have to see if I can find it online.

Michele | 935 comments Woohoo! I love the Foundation books, and they have recently been in the news, e.g. [may contain spoilers] Making Asimov's psychohistory a reality: Using big data to predict the future and What Isaac Asimov taught us about predicting the future. Looking forward to this re-read.

Christine | 971 comments I am really hoping to get in on this group read! I have never read any Asimov, so this will be a great opportunity to get my feet wet. :-)

Philina | 1085 comments I'm in - just got the audio book - and I've never read Asimov either.

Terry | 2421 comments Let us know what you think of the audio book, and who is the reader. I’m not sure if I want to listen or actually read this one.

This is a classic science fiction. I've read the first three books.

message 10: by MK (new) - rated it 4 stars

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments We used to subscribe to an Asimov magazine in the early 90s. I think that might be the only Asimov stuff I've actually read, tho.

The narrator is Scott Brick.

I‘ll most likely start mid April, as I‘ve decided to join a buddy read and will read that book first.

In that case, you still haven't read any Asimov :) Asimov's Science Fiction was never written by him. He was editorial director until he died in 1992, but the magazine was (and still is) a speculative fiction magazine that publishes all sorts of new and established authors.

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments LOL~! Thx, Michelle :)

I didn't think I'd read any Asimov, but I remembered the mag. Couldn't recall if there had actually ever been anything written by him in it or not. Appreciate the info :)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 48 comments Got a bit confused with the reading order of the Foundation series, but my library has the exact edition put up in this group, so I am not going to think too hard about it (and it´s the first in the publication order as far as I can tell, and if that order is fine with others, it´s fine with me:) ). The book is currently out and I need to finish other books first, but if it hasn´t come in in a couple of weeks, I may use my mad librarian skills (mwuahaha) to borrow it from another library.

This will be my first Asimov read (I have wanted to read his books for years) and also my first group read here :)

Michele | 935 comments Here's a fun bit of trivia for you: It was Asimov who invented the Three Laws of Robotics, which have since been adapted/adopted by any number of SF authors. They've also received attention in the AI community and been discussed in the context of self-driving cars and Big Data.

(Alas, there aren't any robots in the Foundation series, or at least not that I recall!)

Janice (JG) | 106 comments This will be the second time around for me, but I remember being gobsmacked by it when I first read it, tho' I was pretty young and untried in scifi. It will be interesting to see if it still holds up for me.

If I remember correctly, those came from I, Robot.

Lena | 346 comments This will be my first time reading Foundation. I have put a hold on the audiobook at my library.

I’ve been subscribing to Asimov’s Magazine for a few months.

Janice (JG) | 106 comments It seems pretty choppy at first, but I'm getting used to the fast pace.

message 22: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5214 comments I have placed this book on hold at local library. I have been wanting to read some Asimov. Looks like I have been helped to an opportunity ☺

Philina | 1085 comments I‘m starting to read today 😁

Pamela (bibliohound) | 332 comments Just picked this up from the library, looking forward to getting started.

Leslie | 33 comments Just started reading Foundation this week. My first Asimov and my first group read. At chapter 8 and so far I’m enjoying it.

message 26: by MK (new) - rated it 4 stars

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Welcome to the group and your first group read, Leslie! :)
I just finished it, I enjoyed it very much. Hope you do as well

Christine | 971 comments I'm still slowly working my way through this one. Partly because of my recently limited reading time, and partly because I'm struggling with it a bit.

I am determined to keep going though! See you all in the Spoiler thread someday. :-)
