We recently lost our primary source of income, Amazon Associate sales. Due to a minor error on our part, we unknowingly had in infraction of their terms. We tried to appeal after we corrected the issue, but was not successful and they terminated our account. Over the years, we have had donations from our wonderful supporters, but it is not enough to cover our operating costs. We are extremely sad to have to close down the site after almost 10 years. Thank you for all your support over the years!!

Shirley Bennett (1shirlb) | 45 comments I am so very sorry to see your wonderful service close!! I have come to rely on it to insure I have all the books in a series & the notification have been of great value-
Hopefully, one day soon you will be back!!!
Thanks so much for all the ‘facts’ over the years!!!

Kathleen (goodreadscomkathleenod) | 2 comments I'm sorry to see this happen and I hope that this will site will return one day. Thanks you for all you did for readers to keep their series accurate.

Laura CandOs Mom (lauracosmom) | 1 comments Wow. That sucks. I love your sight and used it all the time. Amazon sucks

message 5: by Bonita (new)

Bonita (fiona14) | 1 comments Today I tried to log in to download the CSV file with my history, but every time I click to log in, it just flashes and the screen doesn't change. I'm afraid I'll lose my years of reading history on your site.

message 6: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (labtech89) We should petition Amazon to reinstate them.

message 7: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 5 comments I hate this has happened too. I had 189 different series tracked on the site and loved keeping them up to date and seeing what my next books were. I also have been unable to log in to get the csv file.
Is it possible to add a reset password link there on the final log on page?
Thank you for all you have done and your efforts to keep it going.

message 8: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 34 comments I'm very sad this has happened. I also hope that one day you'll be back.

I've downloaded my csv file and will have "fun" sorting it out eventually :) 708 series, over 2000 books read. Over 9 years worth of tracking.

So sad. I bought some books through your site but was one of the many that did not provide an adequate income in spite of the fact that I really appreciated the site.

message 10: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Hueging (katrinaywg) | 1 comments I am really sad it closed as well as this site brought me back to reading a few years ago. Does anyone have suggestions for other sites that show you the full series like FictFact did? I just joined Goodreads but it doesn't seem to be an options.

All suggestions are appreciated as I feel completely lost right now with trying to track all the series I follow!

message 11: by Jwb52z (new)

Jwb52z | 7 comments Every site I know of that provides anything like what FictFact did has a limit of 5,000 books unless you pay a yearly subscription fee. I'm trying "Libib" to see how it goes. I don't have 5,000 books in my former FictFact library, so it's ok for the foreseeable future for me.

message 12: by Naomi (new)

Naomi | 7 comments So sorry for this news. I have been depending on your great site for so long. I will miss you, thank you for all the great service.

message 13: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (frazerc) | 3 comments So sad.

I have also been using goodreads for series, reviews and recommendations. I have more than 5000 books on - not all series, of course. I believe Amazon owns goodreads...

message 14: by Francine (new)

Francine (frankie_7) | 4 comments This is so disappointing to hear. FictFact has been so helpful to me in tracking my series and making sure I read books in order. Since I had learned the majority of your came from Amazon I did make it a habit to access through you so when I was purchasing the next book in one of my series. It can be so difficult to figure out a series order sometimes.

I'm really hoping that all is not lost and there is some way this can be reversed and FictFact revived.

message 15: by Terri (new)

Terri (tee_reads) | 3 comments So sad. I have become increasingly unhappy with Amazon of late. I hope that the decision makers will reconsider and reinstate Fict Fact at some point. I did download my CSV file and like someone else said, will try to sort it out at some point.

message 16: by Jason (new)

Jason | 1 comments Extremely sad news. I hope there's some way your site can be saved. Is there any way we can download the series we are following as well as the books we've read? I have so many I'm not sure what I'm going to do without that list....

message 17: by Jody (new)

Jody Hamilton | 2 comments Fictfact: one my favorite website. I even had it as my homepage. Is there anyway you could reinstate the website with an annual fee?

message 19: by Teri Pre (new)

Teri Pre | 89 comments I've loved and used FictFact for years! I'm devastated. Brian, so many people have offered to pay for a subscription (including me) is this at all a viable option? I'd willingly pay $10 a month for the privilege of continuing with FictFact.

message 20: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 1 comments So sad to hear! I have suggested FictFact to many of our library patrons who read series. I will miss you all and the ability to track my series.

I'm also going to give libib.com a try. I've already emailed them about how to import the .csv file from FictFact. We can compare notes in a few weeks, I guess.

message 22: by Deb (new)

Deb (otherdeb) | 13 comments This totally sucks. FictFact has been one of my two go-to sites for reading tracking (Goodreads is the other one, of course).

There are days the hate for Amazon is just too big to express.

I agree - I would absolutely pay $10/month for the very valuable service FictFact provides. I really wish you had let folks know about this issue before it became mission-critical, though.

message 24: by Deb (new)

Deb (otherdeb) | 13 comments Well, Libib got back to me quickly, but I am somewhat less than pleased with them so far - importing the .csv file was easy enough, but can you imagine a reading tracking program that only lets you import the author's last name, middle name, or first name, but not his/her WHOLE name?

I will be looking for other tracking apps, but I really wish Brian could extend an offer of becoming a paid service to us.

If you actually type in your use name/password it should work

message 26: by Deb (new)

Deb (otherdeb) | 13 comments A thought, Brian -- would you be willing to do a fundraiser such as GoFundMe or Indigogo to raise enough money to keep FictFact going for another year or so, while those of us who love it come up with some way to sustain it beyond that?

message 28: by Ingo (last edited May 19, 2019 01:39AM) (new)

Ingo (ilembcke) | 16 comments I must admit I did not use fictfact much lately (a year or so). It was too much work to keep this and Goodreads updated, a connection between Goodreads and fictfact would have been useful.
Still, makes me sad to see it go.

For the downloading of the CSV-file, this went without a hitch for me, a suggestion if you think login is working, only the download not:
turn off pop-up-blocker
use a different browser
try again a few hours later (might be a hickup)
if all this fails, I am sorry to be out of ideas.

Login problems can only be used by the service of fictfact.

message 29: by Randi (new)

Randi | 1 comments Oh no, this is terrible! FictFact is a favorite and I've recommended it to so many people. Brian, I hope you find a way to reinstate this at Amazon or keep it going on your own.

****I will be happy to pay an annual fee****

And, I started a Libib account but not finding it as friendly as FictFact. Guess I have to look around but I didn't see where to rate the books, the Series do not come up in order written and I don't see a way to separate an author's series other than making tons of new 'Libraries'. I'm not enjoying it and don't think I'll continue with it.

message 30: by Esther (new)

Esther (esthermstrom) | 7 comments I'm also in if there's either a subscription fee or a fundraiser. I've been using FictFact for almost a decade, and although I was able to import my books into GoodReads with a minimum of fuss, this site is just too complicated for what I want.

I just want a way to track my series and see reading orders. I also looked at libib.com, but it seems to be more of a personal inventory tracker than a series tracker - I didn't see a way to follow a specific series and be notified of new books being added, for example.

message 31: by John (last edited May 19, 2019 12:10PM) (new)

John Mosman | 2 comments Even if we did pay an annual fee, did the site work due to getting information from Amazon? If so, fees would not change that. Just a thought. Sad to see it go and thanks for letting us download our series information.

message 32: by Esther (new)

Esther (esthermstrom) | 7 comments I believe it did get info from Amazon, but Amazon is not the only bookstore out there. I'm a web dev, and I know that Barnes & Noble, BAM, and several others have API's available. I think it could probably be updated to work with any of them.

message 33: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1 comments I'm so sad! Since I already catalogue my books both in a local database and on Goodreads, I was not always up-to-date in tracking my reading on FictFact.

But where I think this site was really a champion was on giving users the ability to follow series, easily checking what was the next title in a series and being informed of when new titles would be published.

I, personally would not pay for another cataloging website, but would be willing to contribute for the following and information part. Really useful!

message 34: by Sylvie (new)

Sylvie I'm so sorry this happened! I've been a FictFact user for years and it's been indispensable for me for keeping up with the dozens of series I'm following.
Whether it will help or not, I don't know, but I certainly plan on writing a letter to Amazon to protest their decision.

Lynn (officerripley) | 4 comments Sorry to hear about this, Brian; FictFact was a great site. (Guess Bezos is grumpy about his impending divorce fees...)

This has nothing to do with access to the Amazon API.

message 38: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (pals20) | 1 comments I am so sorry to hear this. I loved the book calendar feature and used it to track my favourite author releases. :-(

message 39: by Teri Pre (new)

Teri Pre | 89 comments For those of you who have downloaded your list, am I correct in thinking that only the books that you've read are listed? It seems that only my completed series are in my list. Granted, I had over 600 series that I'd read or planned to read, but the list I received looked pretty sparse.

According to my profile before closure I had 708 series & 2008 books read, my csv spreadsheet has downloaded with 2079 books listed. All read, to be read, reading, skipped books listed and not the rest of the series unfortunately.

message 42: by Teri Pre (new)

Teri Pre | 89 comments Thanks. I thought that was the case. I never used the "Currently Reading" or the "To Be Read" buttons because I couldn't be bothered. Guess I should have taken the time. Oh well. I'm hoping for a reprieve of some type in the future.

message 43: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 34 comments I didn't normally use those buttons either and was surprised at how many came up - but we're talking about 10 books or so, so not sure why the discrepancy between 2008 & 2079 (less the 10 odd books).

message 44: by Brian (new)

Brian Kirsten | 41 comments Mod
We're trying to figure out how we'd get the next books and tracked series data out to users.

The problem is those systems are dedicated pieces of software that we'd have to run and with our income getting pull out from under us running that software isn't possible.

We'll let you know if we figure something out.

message 45: by Teri Pre (new)

Teri Pre | 89 comments I don't remember how many books I'd read but I had just gone over 600 series (with a few pending...now I know why they weren't added) so that one was easy to remember. I had a lovely system of keeping track of what series I was planning to read next in audio and on my Kindle so now I'm struggling to find a new way. I'm a bit (okay, A LOT) OCD about my books and the order I read them in and this has seriously messed with my head.

I'm still hoping for some type of reprieve before July 1st.

No, I understand the issue had to do with terms of service that you somehow violated. My point was that if you are no longer allowed to pull info from Amazon because of the TOS violation, there are other bookstores out there that you probably could pull data from (and create affiliate accounts with, if it's the income that's the problem.)

This is the first I'm hearing of this. Shouldn't FictFact users have received an email notification? I didn't, yet I had been receiving updates on my series via email until very recently. I'm shocked.
