(page 13) - "But I go with Farina to the other Temple and sometimes I go alone in the morning when I wake or later when there are shadows ecoming over the world, presaging night. I move quietly. This is a book that I would not have read without this challenge. I had never heard of the man. He was born and raised in England and did poorly in school, being expelled multiple times. At 18, he took off to walk from The Netherlands to Istanbul, supported by a very small allowance and sponging off old and new friends. He was a hero in Crete in World War II. He spent the rest of his long life writing articles and books.

I read it in its translation into French : La Bâtarde d'Istanbul.
