Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Review (view spoiler)[This was a lovely book, but not what I hoped for. It left me a little, not disappointed, but unsatisfied I guess?
For some reason I thought this was a sci-fi book and that Station Eleven was going to be an actual place, or at least be a story-within-a-story. Spoiler, it’s not. It’s slightly sketched out and it means a huge amount to some of the characters but we the readers don’t get much.

Also, everything else is kind of vignettes. We don’t a full picture of anyone. And that wouldn’t matter if more story hadn’t been teased in many cases. I really cared about all the characters, and I wanted the book to go a bit deeper.
Thus my underwhelmed response. It was very good, but it was close to being great and that’s frustrating. Still, I would recommend. (hide spoiler)]

Review: (view spoiler)[First off - I almost deducted a star because the voices are a bit too similar. However it could attributed to the fact that lady-loves in comics tend to be rather interchangeable. I would have liked each woman to be more distinct on the page itself... but nitpick.

Because this is a fucking great book. It’s a *yes, THIS* book. It’s fun, funny, and really really angry.

My favorite story was Julia/Jean, possibly because I love that character and have always been more than a little pissed about what happens. I love Valente’s dissection.
Bayou broke my heart, and it again was spot-on. Ahhhh, the rage and the greif!

An interesting tidbit... I was able to recognize almost every hero in the book - (and I guessed at Daredevil but was not sure until I googled). But except for Jean Grey and Harley Quinn, I knew the story but *not the name* of the girl. A true comic fan would probably recognize all of them, but for the dabbler, the movie-watcher, the people who only know stories via pop-culture osmosis... that’s how it goes. The women are not *characters*, they are kindling for the hero plot. (hide spoiler)]
