Oh, what did you think of this one? I've had it sitting on my shelf for years now but still haven't read it."

It's one of those books where I can really appreciate the quality of the writing but it's a very bleak book from the landscape to the characters. And the story is depressing so I gave it a 3 stars. Although I think I'm in the minority most readers scored it higher.

Hmmm... I'll try to keep my expectations in check once I pick it up (in the next five years or so haha). I've heard the writing was good and apparently it's decently researched as well, but it's good to be warned about the characters. Landscape I can live with because it can be bleak on the island.

I've decided to change my adventure book. As much as I'd like to read my time travel romance, I also want to read The Great Zoo Of China, which is on my Closet Cleaning list and brings a few more points as it's a little bigger. I'm behind on that challenge, so figured it'd be a good idea to try and read one from that list instead of something else ;-)

Good idea, E.
And I think that is a better read anyhow. Bigger but fast paced so probably won’t take long to read 😉🤪. Plus The Geir series goes downhill fast imo

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Shhhhh...

I think everyone must be really busy reading... It's gone so quiet in here :)

I had a slow start, as I was away at a mixed media workshop on Saturday, so only got to read a few pages before bed, but at 200 pages a day I'll be done with this one Wednesday. If people stop pestering me for stuff, I'll be done a lot sooner, lol. :)

People can be so inconsiderate sometimes ;-)

I.... didn't do all that much reading this weekend, I have to admit. Which is also why I'm never going to be able to finish Dry and the Zoo book, so I'm only going to finish Dry and sneak a quickie kindle freebie in while at work since I can read that on the screen.

Sometimes I see big... because I really really want to read all these books!

message 1316: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments I read more than I expected this weekend but it still wasn't all that much... especially not stuff that counts for this challenge 😅

You're making me want to reread Hidden Legacy, Tea! And I already have so many books I want to read haha ;-)

I think I might actually have to reread them though, my fingers are itching to pick them up as I really loved them.

Did you enjoy Sweep of the Blade?? Is it just Maud's story or do the others make an appearance as well? As in a continuation of the previous book, I mean.

message 1325: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Jul 29, 2019 01:28PM) (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Sonia is probably going to kill me when/if she reads this, but IA series I've read so far (even if it's only one book), I liked Kate least.
I picked up Burn one because it worked for another challenge and had at least one more letter. Now I'm waiting for second books from library and hoping it will come soon and it'll work for next round :P

Sweep, yes, it's just Maud. She went with Helen and Arland to his home planet (to meet family :P). You actually get to see good number of vampire's customs. Prologue is abbreviated previous book from Maud's POV and then it goes from there. Should I mention that it ends with cliffhanger?

message 1326: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13647 comments Mod
Of course it ends with a cliffhanger.... ;-)

Admittedly, the first Kate book isn't the best one, but the series does get better and I love it.
That being said, it has nothing on Hidden Legacy. I don't know why, but that one pulled me in so, so much more. And considering how big they are, I've gone through Burn extremely fast (for my reading speed anyway hehe).

message 1327: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Jul 29, 2019 01:50PM) (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I've finished Burn in an afternoon. I didn't really expect I'll just go through it like that. (I hadn't plan my next read *grins*)

It took me couple tries to get through first Kate and yes it gets better later, but still Innkeeper and Hidden Legacy are ... *speechless*
Edge series is also ok. But not in the I-need-next-book-immediatly category. :P

Ok I’ve put Burn for Me on my tbr. The cover really put me off, but reading your comments and also looking at melindam’s review it seems I shouldn’t judge the book by its cover 😉

I knooooow, the cover is... slightly terrible.

It isn't the insta must-have-you-now-and-ravage-you(-in-public) kind of love. The half-naked dude on the cover is very much misleading hehe.

❀Tea❀ wrote: "Edge series is also ok. But not in the I-need-next-book-immediatly category. :P"

Agreed!
Took me ages to read the first one, then it took me ages to pick up the second one. And I'm really not fussed about having to read the third and fourth books right away. I'm actually keeping them for I's in challenges haha ;-)

To be fair, I'm mostly reading two, but as other teams have people signed up for 2 and reading 6, I'm not gonna feel guilty about that either, lol!

message 1333: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13647 comments Mod
That's the thing. It's easy to sign up with a lower number, but once the challenge hits, it's hard to stick to that number if you're able to read way more than you've signed up with.

message 1334: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I did sign up with lower number. I was going by Down Under and Right Side Up numbers where by the end I didn't even have enough books read for category I've signed up for. And no, tasks weren't the problem as I've read a book and then look where to fit it :P
I did read here a lot of Agatha Christie's books and they are mostly quick reads so they've added to my read book numbers. (I found bbc dramatizations of the books, so after I'd finished reading it I'd listen to that so basically I've read those books 1,5(?) times and my numbers should be even higher. Luckily 'rereads' doesn't count in less then 6 months between reads *grins*)

message 1335: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13647 comments Mod
Sometimes it helps to look at the tasks before you read :-p

Oh, yes, that would definitely have made your reading numbers go up even more haha! That's a good way to do things though - and then the story is still fresh in your mind when you're listening to the dramatisations. BBC has such a knack for doing them well, too! I used to love listening to their Shakespeare dramatisations.

message 1336: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments Yeah it's definitely hard for me to stick to a lower number - I thought the "not quite 4" would be optimistic for me but turns out I can do 4 easily pretty much any week... should've learned from TT last year that I apparently go pretty hard for challenges 😂

message 1337: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments To be fair, I normally read at least 3 or 4 books a week, but for this challenge I'm making sure to do an 800+ each week, which keeps my total books down quite a bit, lol.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Um... botheration! lol.

Recently read The Firebrand, which would have been a good one for this (retelling of the fall of Troy, from the POV of Kassandra, in case anyone is interested). (also a "Z"!)

Will have a looksee what I have, but not holding out much hope for the genre!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Oh wait! The Winter King: A Novel of Arthur 560 pages, definitely an A (for Arthur), and possibly more.

Nope, never mind, not listed on the first page :(

message 1345: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments I'm guessing William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope and the rest of the series won't count, being written to mimic Shakespeare's play format and all...

Absolutely brilliant set of books though, lol.

message 1346: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments I can get my hands on a copy of Death Comes to Pemberley. 330 pages, P author. Will be able to read a chunkier one alongside.

message 1347: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments Retellings definitely aren't my favorite but I found a couple I'd be willing to read (and that my library has...):

If I'm Being Honest (A author)
Ordinary Girls (O)

And this word means I can finally also start This is How It Always Is!

I also plan on finally picking up The Book Thief which would be a Z out of the way :-)
