lethe | 16359 comments I am (still) unclear on when to use Unknown and when to use Anonymous.

I just edited this book and credited Unknown, because Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are also listed under Unknown.

But when I checked The Exeter Book (of which poems The Anglo-Saxon Elegies contains a selection), the author is listed as Anonymous.

Which is correct in these cases?

Judging from the descriptions of Unknown ("Books can be attributed to "Unknown" when the author or editor (as applicable) is not known and cannot be discovered") and Anonymous ("traditional stories not attributed to a specific author (...) Books whose authorship is merely uncertain should be attributed to Unknown"), I would think they should be under Unknown.

Am I correct?

Dobby (dobby0390) | 7859 comments fwiw, I agree. I think of Anonymous as a name that authors use when they don't want their identity known.

This from the "Unknown" author page:
Books whose authorship is purposefully withheld should be attributed instead to Anonymous.
