Title spelling? Doesn't make sense to me

Hello, one thing (among many) that is bothering me about this novel, is the title of The WITCH Elm rather than the correct name for the tree: the wych elm. I thought the use of "witch" might be alluded to somehow in the storyline, but there was nothing truly haunting or metaphysical about the tree that would explain this in my opinion. Have I missed something? Thanks for any insight.

Huh. The title of the UK edition is The Wych Elm - how bizarre that they would change it?!

Many countries change both the cover art and the title to suit their own market.

Regarding the spelling, the elm tree is also known as the Wych which is derived from the English word Wiche, and the Saxon Wice, which means pliable or supple, possibly a reference to its use in weaving baskets and wicker men statues, not witches broom sticks!
