Elena I just finished reading it. I think it was great.
I started the second book but put it aside for now. It doesn't pick up where the first one ended. For what I read, it is somebody else's story and Sabriel doesn't appear until the middle of the book. Is it really a series?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) @Elena: It really is a series, yes, but, as you say, it isn't a direct continuation. It's more about the goings on in the world in general, and the role of the Abhorsen and the Abhorsen-in-waiting and the Clayr and the whole shebang, which is where Lirael comes in.

I did find it odd that Sabriel, the protagonist of the first book, becomes a secondary character in the second and third books. However, I liked Lirael and the Disreputable Dog so much that, after the intitial 'wtf?', I didn't really mind. I ended up finding Lirael an even more likable and relatable character. (Though it's the animals, in large part, which make the stories so much fun.)

It is a bit jarring at first, but they're still excellent stories.

Also, I've read that a prequel and a "sequel of sorts" are both in the making. The prequel focuses on Clariel, an earlier Abhorsen, but I've not heard anything about what the sequel is about.

LaTrica I read it last year.

Jeanne (jeannekc) I listened to the audiobook on a long drive in February. Tim Curry is a terrific reader!

Tracy Dobbs | 121 comments I read this one a few years back....guess I better dust it off for a re-read.

Vasja I've read it,

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Um...

I am NOT volunteering - but I was just wondering if we were going to actually start discussing the book at some point?

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments blackrose - soon as I get my copy, I'll jump right into it quick-like and start discussing..

message 20: by Ruta (new)

Ruta I've read it and got so into it that forgot to do my homework so my mum banned reading for a week.

message 23: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir I read it once when it was first published and again about 2 years ago. I was planning to reread the next book in the series (as soon as I can remember which one comes second).

Mary-Ann (arcticsilence) Lirael is the next one :)

message 25: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir Thanks! I feel like maybe I read them out of order originally... Abhorsen is the third one?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Yes, Abhorsen is the third and, currently, last in the series (not counting the short story in Over the Wall).
