Not sure if these are considered niche sub-genre, but here goes:

- Vampire - but it must be done well, for example, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

- Zombie - must be done well, for example, The Girl With All the Gifts

- Fairy tale retelling

- Magical realism - but I am really picky about this one. The Night Circus is good.

- Time travel

- Apocalyptic

213. What book have you thought about long after you closed it?

message 753: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments There are many books that I could list here, but I will go with The Stand by Stephen King. I read it years ago and still think about it.

214. What is your most disappointing read this year (so far) and why?

message 755: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I've read a lot of average or below average books this year, but I was pretty disappointed with Home Before Dark by Riley Sager. After reading Lock Every Door by him I really expected more from this one.

message 756: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments My disappointing read this year, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The story could have been great with the parts about government control and free will but they were drowned out by all the violence. And the last/extra, controversial chapter (view spoiler)

215. What is your most surprising read this year (so far) and why?

message 758: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments The Red Lotus by Chris Bohjalian. I had never read anything by him before. I didn't go in with any expectations. It was such a weird concept, but I somehow ended up really liking it.

Most surprising read this year, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. I had such low expectations for this book. I thought the author was just trying to make more money off The Hunger Games. I don't know if she was or not, but I ended up loving this book as much as The Hunger Games trilogy.

216. What do you consider to be your favorite author's best book?

message 761: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I've only read one book my a lot of my favorite authors. I've read multiple books Riley Sager has written, so I'm obviously going to say Lock Every Door.

I just downloaded The Tea Dragon Society.

For historical fiction - I’d say alternate history with a fantasy twist
For horror - I like gothic horror

217. What do you consider to be your least favorite book by your favorite author?

message 766: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments My least favorite book by Sager is The Last Time I Lied. Of course, it was also the first book I read by him. I almost didn't read anymore by him.

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments One of my favorite authors is Stephen King. But, I disliked It so much that I didn't finish it. (Thank goodness I did not start with that book.)

218. What are buzzwords that make you walk away from a book? (When you see these in a blurb/synopsis you will put the book down and not want to read it.)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments .

- stream of consciousness
- academic/scholarly
- humour

I don't know if these are considered buzzwords, but they will certainly make me put a book down.

219. If you eat while reading what is your go-to food or does it matter? (Snacks, baked goods, a meal?)

message 774: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments Cookies are probably my favorite snack to eat while reading. I don't really eat while reading though.

220. If you could be a fictional character for a day, whom would you choose?

message 776: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments Hermione from Harry Potter comes to mind. I am sure there are others, but my mind is drawing a blank. So, I will be smart and magical for a day.

221. Have you ever liked a side character more than a main character? If so, what character was it (and from what book)?

If I have I can't remember.

Krystyna wrote: "220. If you could be a fictional character for a day, whom would you choose?"

I know this sounds weird, but Katherine from The Tenth Muse is such an interesting fictional character that I don't read about often in other novels.

222. How do you decide on what books you are going to read for the month?

message 780: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I don't really have a method. It all depends on what needs to go back to the library soon and the mood I'm in.

message 781: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments .

- What is due at the library.
- Goodreads groups monthly reads. ...when I decide to participate.
- Challenges I am doing.
- My mood.
- Occasionally, I do a buddy read. Now that I think of it, it has been quite awhile since I have done this.

223. What's your favorite bookstore?

message 783: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I haven't been to many, so this could obviously change in the future. Right now my favorite is HPB but B&N is a close second.

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments Favorite bookstore

Right now it is Amazon. Shopping from the convenience of my home. And one click buying.

But a new used bookstore has opened up in London, Second Chance Bookstore. It might become my favorite.

My physical bookstore favorites are Half Price Books, B & N, and McKay's. My online book shopping tends to be defaulted to Amazon but I have bought books from Book Depository (when I want a certain edition) and Book Outlet.

Debra Diggs | 2444 comments Online bookstores. I have not been in a physical bookstore in over 8 years.

message 789: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments There's just something about a physical bookstore that just makes me so much happier. You also get to see the condition the book is in right then and there.

Oh wow! I couldn't refrain from going to a physical bookstore for 8 years. Although, it would probably be great for my wallet. But, then there's online book shopping.

Mine was "There Are Rocks in My Socks!" Said the Ox to the Fox by Patricia Thomas.

It was my favorite book to read, or have read to me, as a little kid. It was a cute story book that is sadly out of print. It is the first story book that I also remember reading on my own. It is kind of similar to Dr. Seuss with all of the cute rhymes and lessons.

message 795: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I loved Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell. My grandma used to read it to me a lot.

message 797: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I used to go to the library with my mom when I was in elementary school and work on my school projects. We would find books for research, and we'd use the computers to type out anything we needed.

I wasn't an avid reader at the time.
