After many years of being a "struggling" actor in LA, I turned to writing. I have had two novels published: "I'm No P. I." and "A Ghoulish Good Time." I have had MS for serval years now; I know physical and mental pain; so I need much laughter to endure it. Hopefully, my novels do just that--give much laughter.

Daniel Kemp (goodreadscomdanielkemp) | 5275 comments I am an ex-London police officer, mini-cab business owner, pub tenant and licensed London taxi driver and I never planned to be a writer, but after my first novel —The Desolate Garden — was under a paid option to become a $30 million film for five years until distribution became an insurmountable problem for the production company I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm now a prolific storyteller, and although it’s true to say that I mainly concentrate on what I know most about; murders laced by the intrigue involving spies, my diverse experience of life shows in the short stories I have compiled both for adults and children.

I received rave reviews from a prestigious Manhattan publication and been described as —the new Graham Green — by a managerial employee of Waterstones Books, for whom I did a countrywide tour of signing events. I have also appeared on ‘live' nationwide television.

Hello peeps, I've been on this planet for almost 61 years and found out the other day I can string a few words together, in order to make sentences that are semi intelligible.

Ex Royal Navy, Truck Driver, Engineer, Motorcyclist, hospital patient (see motorcyclist) and now novel writer. If nothing else, I've lived long enough to have experiences that can spill over into the novels I write.

At the moment I have book #3 on the blocks and I'm just off now to post some self promotion of my work in the Promote Your Book bit.

Nice to be here in amongst like minded souls and thanks for letting me join the group.

Dan Biermeier | 38 comments Hello:
I am blessed with one of the shortest memories ever recorded. So, if I have posted here previously...this is for readers like me.

I was born very young and was for a nanosecond the youngest person in the world. I was then trained in the middle of America by love and laughter and work. After successfully escaping the middle, I spent a dozen years working around the edges, moving like a gypsy moth; alternately seeking and then flying from the light. Met lust and lost it, found love and held on for dear life. Settled back in the middle for family and career, but am planning our next escape. Our children (trained by a master) have broken out of the middle. So each day brings love and I closer to the leaving. Tick, Tick, Tick...we can't wait. In the mean time I keep working and writing. I hope reading my stories is as much fun for you as writing them is for me.

Belle Ami | 11 comments I write intriguing romantic/suspense/thrillers with a teaspoon of sex. I'm a self-confessed news junky, I love to create cutting-edge stories about politics, espionage, and redemptive love.
I'm a proud Kathryn McBride scholar of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Writing, cooking, spinning, hiking, boxing, and skiing are my passions.
I'm the author of The Only One series, The One (#1), and The One & More (#2), and the third in my series titled One More Time is Not Enough, which was published July 13th, 2016. I was honored to be included in the RWA LARA Christmas Anthology Holiday Ever After featuring my sexy short story The Christmas Encounter. My next series entitled The Tip of the Spear begins with Escape, which was published January 10, 2017. The sequel to Escape, entitled Vengeance was published September 12, 2017.
I've just finished the first book in my new Out of Time series, the soon to be published The Girl Who Knew da Vinci, a romance/paranormal/thriller. Currently, I'm working on book three of The Tip of the Spear Series, titled Ransom.
I call Southern California home where I live with my husband, two children, a horse named Cindy Crawford, and my brilliant Chihuahua, Giorgio Armani.
Hello to everyone in this group, and I look forward to interacting with you.

Martin Freznell Hello everyone,

My name is Martin Freznell. I'm no good at this: introducing myself and my work. Why won't you people just go here https://www.facebook.com/martinfreznell/ and read the first chapter of my new book? You can leave a like. If you want a free copy, just send me a message.

Well, but for some reason I doubt that will work. Fine, fine, here goes.

Martin Freznell, 36, lover of sci fi, fantasy, horror, satire and coffee. And beer. And cats.

Plus, for nearly a decade, I worked in development help. Congo, Cuba, Philippines, Palestina. Because I got really frustrated with my work, I decided I needed a change and for 5 years or so, I was a stage tech, doing mainly light for rock concerts. That work was great, but it broke my ageing back. Now, people throw my CV in the trash can, no matter where I try to get in, though in all fairness, since I do have a masters degree, I no longer try to do just any job any more. (I kind of did that as a stage tech and man man, people will take advantage if you let them, don't they.) Teacher, bartender, industrial worker, librarian, ... I've done all sorts.

So, writing. I've always been writing. Most I've ever written were sad love letters, that I hope never see the light of day again. Some attempts were made to write that novel, that sci fi. Real life objected, and my priorities lay elsewhere.

Now, I'm about to publish my second book. 'Four Men and the Sea' as an Indy. (My debut, 'Not Exactly Shakespeare', a dark, tiny satire is something I'm quite proud of, but impossible to market.)

Cheers

Martin Freznell

Rachel O'Day | 1 comments Hello, my name is Rachel O’Day and I am a NICU nurse in Southeast Texas. I just self-published my first book, Code Pink. It is a medical mystery/thriller. I enjoy writing because it’s a creative outlet to what can be an emotionally exhausting job (which I also love!) I have written children’s manuscripts and have plans for 7 or 8 more novels in my head, but need to recover from Hurricane Harvey before I can focus enough to complete them. I would love to hear from others and invite any questions on my creative process. 🤗

message 370: by Will (new)

Will | 1 comments Hi, I'm Will Kavanagh, write as X. W. Kavanagh because with the 'X' the net domain was open, just past Social Security age and spent many years as a government mule. That includes military officer, civilian analyst and process improvement consultant. I've published three books over the past five years and have 17 more in the bag. I'm on writing sabbatical now, so I read every night when I was otherwise writing. I write kick-ass action adventure thrillers and that's what I enjoy reading most.

Interestingly, I've read the entire catalogues of my favorite authors and am now searching out 'persons of interest.' I looked at genres, picked some candidates and then pulled 'em up on Goodreads to see average ratings coupled with # of reviews. I'm about to launch into Ken Follett's two highest rated series, thanks to Mr. K's incredible pricing. Right, a touch of OCD dinosaur in that I like to read books I can hold. Favorites include DeMille, Flynn, Silva, Sandford, Child, Brown, Clancy, Crais...you get the flow. I just posted a review on Michael Connelly's 'The Last Coyote' that got a lot of likes and comments. That was one hell of a book if you're a Bosch fan.

So I've revealed enough of my druthers that maybe some of you really well-read readers can make some suggestions.

message 371: by Adam (new)

Adam Alexander | 2 comments Hi everyone. I’m new to the group. Thrillers is my favorite genre to read, to watch and to write.

I’ve written five thrillers, and right now I’m launching Garage Band, a feel good thriller, if there is such a thing. My previous books were all action, with some great characters, but I decided to add a little humour to the dialogue and the characters in this one, and the result was a very entertaining caper with no shortage of thrills and edge of the seat suspense while at the same time offering some laugh out loud moments.

It’s the story of a regular guy who gets retrenched by his boss who he thought was his friend, after seventeen years of service. He’s angry as he leaves the building and thinks about keying his boss’ expensive car, just to stick it to him. But he soon has a much better idea. With the help of an explosives expert, he’s going to pull off a grand caper to bring the entire company down.

You can see the official trailer here.

Looking forward to joining the group discussions.

Hello Group,
In addition to having three novels published by small presses, I am a career actor of 30 years-- both in Hollywood and NYC. Twice co-starring on Broadway (one play won the Tony Award for Best Play) I also am known for various film role portrayals, such as the humorous Sleepy Klingon in the hit film Star Trek VI.
However, writing is my passion. I'm currently in the Florida Everglades doing research on a follow up thriller horror story to another novel MUTANT SPECIMEN L about "A grotesquely powerful lab creature capable of medical marvels escapes, but continues to share a magical relationship with a small boy."

James Mack (jamesemack) | 2 comments Hi all,

James E Mack, former Commando and Special Operations soldier. Subsequently worked as a Counter-Terrorism/Counter-Insurgency Advisor as well as setting up Counter-Wildlife Poaching Programs in West Africa.

My first book 'Only the Dead' was very well received by both male and female readers for the sympathetic portrait of a soldier pushed beyond his breaking point.

My current novel 'Fear of the Dark' is also a hit with both sexes and was described by a reviewer as '...First Blood meets The Bill...'

I draw on my personal experiences to bring some authenticity to my books and this seems to appeal to my readers.

Just like to say thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself and look forward to some interesting discussions!

Larry Loftis Hello everyone!

I operate in a strange world ... I write nonfiction thrillers. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it can be done if you spend a year looking for the right story! My first book, INTO THE LION'S MOUTH, became an international bestseller in part because people loved a thriller that was true. My second book, CODE NAME: LISE, is even more of a thriller ... with a love story embedded, and will be out Jan. 15.

i have a third nonfiction thriller going to market probably next week (depending on how busy my agent is!).

And all of these books are spy stories from WWII.

Cheers,
Larry

Ellison Cooper (ellison_cooper) | 8 comments I everyone! My crime thriller, CAGED, just launched and if you had asked me 10 years ago, what I would be doing today, debuting a novel wouldn't have been been on my list of guesses.

10 years ago I was a tenure track professor teaching classes on anthropology, human rights, world history, and international security and peace. Although I dabbled writing fiction just for fun, and I have worked a wide variety of jobs from professional dog walker to murder investigator in Washington DC, almost all of my writing was academic. I published a bunch of articles on cross cultural neuroscience and ancient Maya ritual.

While I was getting my PhD in anthropology, I got to live and work around the world in places like the island of Yap in Micronesia, and Senegal, West Africa. For my dissertation, I spent many years living a tent in the jungles of Belize mapping ancient Maya ruins.

The question I get most often is, how did I go from full time academic to writer? That transition happened when my infant son got quite sick. I ended up having to quit my job as a professor just to be able to make sure he got the medial care he needed.

He's doing wonderfully now, but back then I found myself spending endless hours in doctors waiting rooms with nothing to keep my mind from wandering down a very dark road.

And that's when I started writing fiction much more seriously mainly just to maintain my sanity.

Before Caged I wrote hundreds of short stories and two very crappy novels and was actually taking a break from writing when I came up with the basic concept for CAGED. I was looking for something to read and I jokingly said to my husband, "I wish someone would write a crime thriller that combined archaeology, neuroscience, and dogs.”

I'm pretty sure my jaw actually fell open. That day I started working on what would become CAGED. I got to draw on all my areas of expertise and writing this book was so much fun. I hope people enjoy reading CAGED as much a I enjoyed writing it.

Ellison Cooper

I’ve written six crime thrillers featuring soldier-turned-investigator Danny Lancaster and was startled and delighted to be voted one of the 100 best crime authors in the WH Smith readers’ poll in 2015. I've also written three short factual military histories. I live to write although keyboard time has been cut lately with the arrival of grandson Theo.

Samuel Wardwell | 2 comments Samuel Wardwell is the author of Retribution, a new crime-thriller novel. His work is heavily influenced by the experiences he had in the Georgia prison system.

Wardwell lived a privileged life; he grew up in northern New Jersey, and went to college in New York City. He worked for many years as an architect and historian, but struggled with addiction. Wardwell became a functioning alcoholic and made decisions he'd later come to regret. He eventually ended up in prison.

Samuel gained two jobs while incarcerated. When he wasn't teaching prisoners, he was working on his first book: Retribution. The lead character, Marc, is based loosely on himself.

Today, Samuel Wardwell lives in Roswell, Georgia. He has been sober for over ten years.

L.A. Kent | 434 comments L A Kent is the pen name of Andy Sinden and Louise Harrington. They have lived in Cornwall for sixteen years and love it; especially the ruggedness and beauty of this part of England.

Their novels reflect the terrain and the often slow-paced lifestyle; the working lives of the local population and the carefree abandonment of the holidaymakers who rush to the county at holiday time.

But in contrast to the beauty are the twisted minds of the characters they create and the often disturbing crimes they commit.

In their business lives before writing they travelled extensively all over the world and they enjoy being able to bring places they have been to and worked in into their books.

LOUISE: Before a successful career in sales and marketing, mostly at the forefront of computers and IT Louise studied literature and French and lived in France for a while. In business, among many other things, Louise helped set up and run a software services company in South Africa.

In her first full time job she worked on the Seaspeed hovercraft between Dover and Boulogne and whilst at university she worked many vacations for Saga when it was located above shops in Folkestone High Street.

ANDY: Andy’s corporate career was also mostly at the forefront of computers and IT, preceding it with a qualification in psychology then working with addicts, battered women and their children and high end criminals. He also met and had fascinating discussions with both male and female murderers.

Whilst at primary school Andy sold firewood and blackcurrant rootings door to door and in his youth he worked as a gardener for the good citizens of Lyme Regis, and often ate his lunch in the author John Fowles' writing shed. He has also worked as an ice cream van salesman and a dustman.

R.D. Murray | 9 comments This is very hard to write, but when I was in the 3rd grade I was bullied so badly I wanted to kill myself. All because I was shy, quiet and awkward. I was thrown in the boy’s bathroom by these 3 particular kids who would punch and kick me as hard as they could. I could barely walk as everyday they would abuse me over, and over again. The other kids in school would just laugh at me and no one helped. In fact, those same kids who watched and knew about my abuse would just join in, tease me, and they even threw food at me during lunch. My mom came to school so much to fight for me, but it didn’t help. I had just about given up living in this world. Somehow God saved me and I found writing. It was an outlet to take me away from the pain I was going through in this world. I wanted to create different characters, and a different world just to escape. Writing really saved my life. Now at 42 I just released my first novel. My Dead Blue Caterpillar. I have to say I still am a bit shy so this is hard for me to ask but any support for my book would be very helpful. It’s very inexpensive and a good read. I want to thank you deeply from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you so much for joining me.

Suzanne Seddon (suzanneseddon) | 8 comments Suzanne Seddon was born in 1968 in Islington, London. After leaving school she had many interesting jobs, from swimming teacher to air hostess, and was able to travel the globe. Now a single mum to her teenage daughter Poppy-willow, Suzanne spends her days writing and has written several articles for magazines and newspapers.

Growing up, Suzanne witnessed mental and physical abuse within her own family which strongly influenced her when she wrote her first play, A Fool’s Circle, when she attended the famous Anna Scher Theatre. Suzanne, however, was not content to leave it there and decided to go ahead and transform her play into a novel.

Not one to shy away from exciting challenges, she also wrote, acted, directed, cast and produced a trailer for the book around her hometown in Islington with the support of local businesses, who recognised the drive and importance of Suzanne and her work.

Suzanne is a passionate writer and she is determined to be heard so that the issue of domestic abuse is raised amongst the public's consciousness, empowering others to speak out. She wants those who suffer at the hands of another to have their voices heard, loud and clear.
