Miss Murder (janellehavens) | 2 comments Hi everyone! I'm Janelle. I'm a criminal justice major in college at the moment and some of my favorite book genres include history, historical fiction, true crime, and mystery/thriller. I'm also from the U.S. Very excited to post in this group more!

Andrea Engle | 2091 comments Welcome Miss Murder!!! Does your sobriquet indicate that you are a fan of No Graves As Yet (World War I, #1) by Anne Perry by Anne Perry Anne Perry? Or The Black Country (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad, #2) by Alex Grecian by Alex Grecian Alex Grecian? If so, I’m tremendously gratified to welcome not only a new member, but a comrade in arms!!!!

No Graves As Yet is on my to-read list, I looooove Victorian-esque novels! I haven't heard of The Black Country, is it part of a series?

message 155: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Engle | 2091 comments Yes, it is. The first volume in the series The Yard (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad, #1) by Alex Grecian by Alex Grecian Alex Grecian I have on by TBR list, but obviously you can read the second volume of the series without reading the first. In some ways I prefer Anne Perry Anne Perry. Some of her series are set in Victorian Britain, like Alex Grecian Alex Grecian; however, the series I’m recommending is set in Britain. during the First World War. Welcome to our group, Janelle, a.k.a. Miss Murder (what an interesting nom de internet)! We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in this topic:

Historical fiction

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

John (chief46) Hello all. My name is John. I am new to the group. I have always had a love for history, military history and of course a lot of reading on the American Civil War. In the professional world I serve as the Fire Chief for the United States Naval Academy and I am also an active volunteer firefighter and EMS provider in my community. I have found that reading helps me escape at times and transports back to events that I find interesting. Prior to my fire department service, I served in the Army and was a member of the “Old Guard” where I spent many of my days in Arlington National Cemetery.

Jacob Powles | 1 comments Hi guys,

I'm Jake, I've been on Goodreads for just over a year and somehow only now discovering that these brilliant groups exist!

I finished studying economics and finance at University last year so any book business or economics usually catches my eye! But I'm also big into history, politics and any books that I can learn something useful or interesting from!

I'm aiming to read 20 books this year as I only managed 17 last year.

Looking forward to getting involved in the group!

Akshay Bhattbhatt | 3 comments Hello All,

My name is Akshay and I am from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I am presently working as a manager at a local nightclub. My love for history started with a children's book called Stories of Freedom, wherein I found my passion for all things historical! Unfortunately, lately I haven't found the time to read as much as I used to. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I have found myself with a lot of free time and I am looking to get back into reading again.

Cheers!

It would have to be the story of the second Mongol invasion of Japan in 1281, where the vastly outnumbered Japanese held off Mongol forces for more than 2 months, before the Mongol fleet was destroyed by a typhoon (kamikaze).

Mustafa Salamov Hi, my name is Mustafa. I am from Baku, Azerbaijan.

Right now I am reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (audiobook), which I found to be a bit difficult to understand, maybe because it was written in the 18th century.

Anyway, after reading that book I became interested in American Revolution and would like to learn more about it.

Can someone please suggest a book about it. I would prefer a short one, in order to get key points and get the general idea of American Revolution.

So far the books I found were more than 500 pages, but I would like to read something around 300.

Thank you in advance.

Hello prospective members,

We welcome all new members who would like to join the History Book Club. We ask per our rules and guidelines that all prospective members post an introduction on this thread. We have found that those members who do that get off to a great start so when you do post other members will be comfortable when responding to you. We are like a big global family and we like to get to know everyone.

If you are a director for another organization, a moderator of another group, write a blog or a website, an author - please do not mention this in your introduction. Tell us why you want to be a member of the History Book Club and why you love history and what you think you will gain from the experience. Make it personal but not too personal - we want everyone to maintain their privacy too. Keep it short.

I am going to post our rules and our guidelines here, a note to prospective members who are in charge of media elsewhere and a link about private profiles. In case there is an issue, we value your privacy and we need to reach our members. You may contact me and give me a unique way to contact you if you do not want to go the PM route or you want to maintain your privacy. As long as we have a way to contact you - there are no worries.

Here is a link to our rules and guidelines:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Here is a link to our note to moderators or other social media outlets: (bloggers, and other on line digital media)

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Here is a link about private profiles - we need the ability to contact you about any rules or guidelines if necessary
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Here is a link on how to get started in the group. We want you to get off to the best possible start:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Normally you will receive a welcome note when you join and when you introduce yourself - one of the assisting moderators will get you started off on the right foot.

You will hear from us when we send out an event notification for any book that we are beginning to read and we will ask you simply to click yes, no or maybe. Just to help us with our planning.

We are adamant about no spamming or spam in general and we protect our members from that kind of intrusion. We may send out a periodic newsletter as a broadcast message or ask you to participate in a poll; but we try our best to not bombard our members with loads of notifications. Everyone here is a volunteer so please be kind to each other and our moderators.

If you would like to know a little more about us - here is a link to a write-up:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

We are thrilled that you have joined us - so please just post a sentence or two to say hello and that satisfies our introduction guideline. We are so glad that you are here that we want to welcome you personally.

I wish you all the best at the HBC. Thank you for joining.

Bentley

William Gorton | 2 comments Hello - my name is Bill from Lebanon Twp, NJ. My interests in terms of reading / listening (truth be told I do more listening these days) of history are all over the map.

It has primarily been military history in WW2 (specifically Nazi Germany, Eastern Front), along with leaders / Generals, however I have been trying to learn more about Vietnam, and other wars (WW1), as well.

Also, very interested in ancient Rome - Gibbon is something that has been on my 'to-do' list for more years than I can count.

Looking forward to getting involved - although I am currently working on Atkinson's other trilogy, I do plan to join some of you for the Revolutionary War!

Welcome Anna, thank you for your interesting introduction in outlining your interests in history. We are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from Norway. We look forward to your participation in our book discussions.

Based on some of your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following threads:

Ancient History
Medieval History

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

The British Are Coming The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 by Rick Atkinson by Rick Atkinson Rick Atkinson

Katie | 1 comments Hi everyone!

Thank you for allowing me to join your history group.

My name is Katie & I am from a small seaside town in Scotland. I have a lovely husband, son and two adorable puppies!

My interest in history stems from a young age when my mum first taught me about WW2 and in-particular the concentration camps of that time.

I have since become a university student, studying History and Criminology with the hope that I will eventually be a secondary school history teacher.

I have had an account on goodreads for a while but have never really used it, so here I am trying to make use of it and get some recommendations and I look forward to seeing all of yours.

Emmanuel (manuphoto) Good Morning,

I am Emmanuel, from Montréal, Canada. I have studied history, mostly contemporary European and especially World War II.

I've always been fascinated by this conflict and especially its origins, but I've also studied Roman Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the French Renaissance, the French and German conflicts in the XIXth century, and more.

I am also very interested in the Seven Year War (the French and Indian War, for Americans) as well as the American War of Independence and American Civil War.

I am now reading a lot of fiction but I'm looking to re-start reading some historical works too and to have good discussions about them.

Here seemed like a good place to start :)

Andrea Engle | 2091 comments Good Morning, Tom, how fascinating Latin pronounciation can be. My middle scool Latin teacher insisted on the “w” sound for “v” — “Regina conwewe!” I can hear her now. Your Essex town sounds fascinating. Tell us more about the local “Sutton Hoo.”
Regards,
Andrea
