Elsbeth (elsbethgm) I'd like to nominate The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I've read 2 books by him already and really want to read this!

(even though it is not an short treat)

Elsbeth,The Woman in White is over 600 pages, so doesn't meet Laura's criteria for this group. "It must be less than 250 pages" (under "Book Suggestions for our Menu" thread).

I checked the 13 books goodreads listed as his best, and found The Haunted Hotel at 228 pages. It's not on our bookshelf yet, but I'm sure Laura would add it if you wish.

Julia (juliastrimer) I'd like to nominate The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. The goodreads blurb says:

"Here, for a change, is a fish tale that actually does honor to the author. The Old Man and the Sea revived Hemingway's career, which was foundering.... It also led directly to his receipt of the 1954 Nobel Prize...A half century later, it's still easy to see why. This tale of an aged Cuban fisherman going head-to-head with a magnificent marlin encapsulates Hemingway's favorite motifs of physical & moral challenge."

When I taught this book, we spent time on what the book meant for Hemingway's life and then expanded into what the allegory teaches all of us about life. One of the most famous Hemingway quotes comes from this book, when Santiago says: "A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

I thought I saw this one on the bookshelf, too. But I must be wrong, because now I can't find it anymore...

Christina Howard I'd like to nominate Gathering Blue (The Giver, #2) by Lois Lowry

The Woman in Black is in there. Maybe you just misread?
