Famous professional magician John Mulholland was quietly recruited by CIA administrators to hypnotize subjects and prepare them for mind control experiments. In the early 1950’s, he stopped performing magic shows, citing health problems. However, it was later revealed in declassified documents that Mulholland had actually become an intelligence agent for the Central Intelligence Agency.
Besides Mulholland, there are reports of other stage magicians and hypnotists secretly working for the CIA (especially during Project Artichoke, which was a forerunner to the better known Project MK-Ultra). The theory goes that these hypnotists would find out who are the most easily hypnotized people, then report their findings to the CIA who would then target the reported citizens for mind control experimentation.
