Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished my first book, Six of Crows, and have reported it. It was a major struggle for me to get through this book, I didn't like the writing style or the characters and the whole thing was just very underwhelming. If it hadn't been for the toppler, I probably would have jumped ship. Still, at least it got us some bonus points.

I will now start my second book, Espresso Tales.

I struggled with it too, Margo. The only reason I finished it is because it was a toppler book. If it hadn't been for that, I would have abandoned it. The writing style didn't work for me and I didn't really like any of the characters either. It is a book/series that gets so much hype but I found it very underwhelming. I gave it 2 stars as it wasn't quite as bad as the 1 star books I have read but it was a poor read for me all the same.

message 153: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11635 comments yeah, I'm struggling with the characters too. like you, I'd DNF it if it wasn't for the toppler. Hope the next one is better for both of us :-)

Hopefully it will be! 🙂

Lynn | 2974 comments Hey all, finished my 3rd book and about 100 pages into my fourth.

Currently at work, but will catch up with reporting etc when I get home.

Margo - Just go with whatever one you want. Just let me know which as I think I'll start plotting round 3 tonight.

message 157: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Margo and Lisa, it sux having to read a book you don't like. Thanks for taking two for the team!

Lynn, you're on a roll! Way to go!

I'm a little behind today. It's our 13th year anniversary, Jeff and me. Still loving strong. We might go to dinner or just stay home and watch a movie.

message 158: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11635 comments @Lynn -I'll start Year One later.

@Debra -thanks. I got a lot of listening in today, lots of driving, so I have less then 3 hours to go tomorrow. I wish I could say it grew on me but I'd be lying lol

message 159: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Lol, Margo. I hate it when that happens!

I never warmed to the Audible narrator for The Eleventh Floor. She wasn't very good and it took away from my enjoyment of the book. It would have been much better if I'd just read it. Most of the time I find listening enhances my enjoyment of a book, but not this time. It detracted, big time!

message 160: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Lynn, I will finish my current book in case you want to count it as a solid read. I’m already 25% in it.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Aargh! My 2nd book, 1888-The Ripper File: Book One of the Paranormal; Research and Rescue Institute, is soooo boring! Just awful. I might finish it tonight if I don't fall asleep from boredom.

Oh Debra, that's too bad 😯 I have only got 10% of Six of Crows left to go but it's a pain. I started Year One last night and it is so good - I can't wait to get back to it. I will listen to the boring one while I exercise today and I will surely "feel the burn" lol

How are we all doing?

message 165: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Hi all! I'm 53% of the way through Espresso Tales. It's quite good so far. I'm not enjoying it as much as the first book in the series, but it is a lot more enjoyable than Six of Crows was!

Debra, really sorry to hear your book is so awful. That sucks!

message 166: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11635 comments Finally finished Six of Crows. It was purgatory! I am completely the wrong audience for that one.

Can now get on with Year One with a clear conscience :-)

message 167: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I feel your pain, Margo! It was such a struggle to get through. Well done for sticking with it.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I managed to stay up to 10. There is no way I'd have made it to 12:30 am to finish my darn book. Yawn! Anyway, I'm almost done with it, and am looking forward to reading something I'm confident will be much more entertaining: Power of Three.

How's everyone doing today?

I'm good Debra. Busy day so I didn't get much listening in but at 830 pm I'm already tucked up in bed with a hotty and my alexa. It has turned cold over here so it's the perfect way to end the day. My hubby has just left for the gym, god bless his enery!

I've never read Diana Wynne Jones. I own Dogsbody on kindle. The descriptions of her books always sound great.

Lisa wrote: "I feel your pain, Margo! It was such a struggle to get through. Well done for sticking with it."

Thanks Lisa. We can congratulate each other haha

message 170: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments I've updated the spreadsheet to add round three with books that I believe will be completed - with the exception of Margo's 4th book, which I've put you down as either Hundred Thousand or Secret Diary (as they are both double bonus points). Hope that's ok Margo?

If I've done anything wrong, then please let me know.

message 171: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11635 comments I think it will be The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms as the hp edition of Secret diary is only 384 pages so not double.

I can possibly fit in a 5th if it is not too long. Any preference for number? You can let me know thurs/fri 😀

message 177: by Lynn (last edited Oct 15, 2019 04:19PM) (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Debra - One of the books that fits number 3, so it takes the pressure of me in case I don't get to Obsidio please (I have to complete Gemini first)

So that would be Nine Princes in Amber or Why My Third Husband Would Be A Dog. Would that work?

message 178: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Margo - If you go for a 5th book, then Secret Diary will probably be best as it's one of two books that still have bonus points but with the most options for me to play with.

message 179: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Yep! Thanks Lynn. You're doing a great job!

message 180: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Oct 15, 2019 07:32PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I've had a worse reading week than I wanted. I can definitely do the two books I put down for, but the 3rd is iffy. Will reassess on Friday.

We've had our network at work completely go down for the past 90mins. No access to the drives, internet, systems, wifi, etc. So I sat on my armchair in my office that I never ever use, and finished Power of Three and started The Fourth Bear as I've been carrying it around for the past two days in case I finished the first. Good planning past Rus!

Unfortunately, it's just come back up, hence the post. Back to stupid, boring, snoring work.

What did you think of Power of Three, Rus? I'm about 1/2 way through it and am enjoying it far more than my previous two reads. I should finish today. I'm definitely going for a 4th book: Nine Princes in Amber.

Back to work... aargh!

Margo | 11635 comments I'm finished Year One and while I d8d enjoy, it never quiet lived up to it's potential.

Ready to start The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I'm kinda nervous as Janice found it confusing. I read the broken earth series by this author and i had a hard time keeping track of it. It was brilliant but mind bending!

Off to report then bed. Night all 😴

Sorry! I thought I replied last night, but obviously didn't hit post /facepalm.

I really enjoyed it, but I think I need to read the last chapter again. I got a little confused. Yourself? How it fair against Dogbody?
