PRG virtual reality story about experimental computer.
One of he participants is a paraplegic who can walk and fight when plugged in and gets into a fantasy RPG world.
The plug-in machine is so realistic that some of the participants die in real life when they die in the game world. In the end the survivors return to their own world, but seem to have retained some magic abilities. Or could it be that they are they still plugged in ad the computer just makes them think they're back???

I think this is a stand-alone book. I think it was by Dave Duncan. However, I can't seem to find it in any listing, so I may be wrong about that.

You're not thinking of Killobyte, by Piers Anthony, are you?

Sounds quite a lot like Tad Williams Otherland series. It has an internet that you plug in to, some participants in online games die, and a disabled protagonist.

It's a four book series from memory.

Actually, the people struck down fell into comas, they didn't die. And the story involved the entire virtual online internet, not just a mmorpg world. It is, nevertheless, an excellent read, though.

Damien, you are correct.
I looked it up and I recognize the cover, although not so much the story anymore after so many years. Guess I'll have to read it again. :-)
