C.P. Siebenhuener | 4 comments In 2008, my daughter was in second grade. It was her second year in a new school after we had just moved to a new town. She was having some trouble in class; not always understanding what was being taught. Being somewhat shy, she was afraid to raise her hand and ask questions in class.

She came home from school one afternoon visibly upset. I knew she had a test earlier in the day and I had a feeling it didn’t go well. When she showed me the test, I realized that there was a problem. We sat and talked and she opened up to me about her fear of admitting that she didn’t always understand what was going on in class.

The conversation inspired me to type up a small story with my daughter as the main character. I printed it, folded and stapled it, and added some clipart for illustrations. The next day when she came home from school and went up to her room, she found my “book“ on her bed. After reading it, she ran to me with a big smile on her face.

She loved the story and said how she wished it was a “real book, you know, the kind that people could buy at the bookstore”.

That is how “But What if I Don’t Understand?“ came to life.

BWIIDU? was first released in 2009. Sadly, after only a few years, the publisher closed its doors. For years I did nothing, but always wondered what could have been. I finally decided to resurrect my book and it has been re-released!

I hope teachers, parents, librarians and children of all ages will pick up a copy of my book. It is a cute and endearing story that teaches a very valuable lesson.

Thank you!!
