Card 18 Tasks

message 2: by Peggy (last edited Dec 01, 2019 04:53AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Entertainment Nay Task - The cover has a face in profile. The face must be turned so that the character would be looking to the left or right. The character cannot be looking even partially forward.

Can it be only the face or is it also okay if it's a full person standing sideways, including the face? For example The Boy I Love. Or how about this one, where the body is partially forward but the face is not: The Birth House

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments It could be a full person, but it needs to be large enough that prominent on the cover. I don't think The Boy I Love fits. The person is at the edge of the cover and the profile is actually quite small in proportion to the cover.

Do you have Card 10, Geography Nay task (flag on the cover)? This book would work for it.
The Boy I Love (The Boy I Love Trilogy, #1) by Marion Husband .

I would accept The Birth House because the profile is about half the page.
The Birth House by Ami McKay

Do you have Card 27, Art/Lit Yay task? The Birth House is set in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

message 4: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Janice!

I don't have the flag task, but I did already put down The Birth House as a possibility for Nova Scotia. Good to know it will work for the profile on cover too.

message 5: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments I really enjoyed The Birth House.

message 6: by Peggy (last edited Dec 01, 2019 10:07AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It sounds interesting! I have another book by her as a possibility for the challenge as well, The Virgin Cure. Oh, and I just noticed it also has a face in profile! Or part of it.

message 7: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments I have Virgin Cure on my wishlist. No to the profile, but yes to the lips. Hey! I've got that task - Card 19, Geography Nay. Thanks Peggy! LOL!

message 8: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1796 comments For the Entertainment - face in profile task, does Women Talking by Miriam Toews work?

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Amanda wrote: "For the Entertainment - face in profile task, does Women Talking by Miriam Toews work?"

Yes, it works.

message 10: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11654 comments mmm, I like the sound of The Birth House but I will be good and go with one my mum owns :-( i'm adding it my wishlist though !

I will read Safe With Me by K.L. Slater .

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm looking for a book for Card 18 Yay for History, "The main character is a nurse." Is Lucy Barton a nurse in My Name Is Lucy Barton. From the story summary, I see she is a midwife and she wants to be a doctor, but I cannot tell if this book will fit the criteria. Else - any suggestions?

message 12: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There's one on the tip of my tongue but I just can't remember the title. If it comes to me I'll let you know!

The main book page shows that you've read My Name is Lucy Barton. You gave it 3 stars.

I don't see anything in the book blurb that mentions that she's midwife and wants to be a doctor. It talks about her hospitalization to have an appendectomy, though.

How about Call the Midwife?

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Is the nurse in The English Patient major enough? I would think that would be a good one for 18 Yay. Also, am I right that there is a nurse major character in A Farewell to Arms. I'm not sure they THE main character, but they are major characters, I think.

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments They can be a major character if they share the spotlight of the main character. If that makes sense.

Sorry, I linked the wrong book. I meant My Name is Mary Sutter for the nurse question.

message 17: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Beth.
I already read The English Patient but I agree it would be a good fit for the nurse. She was in the whole story and I think she was just as much a main character as the patient.
I have A Farewell to Arms for another task. (Card 2, Nay for History. It is set in 1917 in Italy too.).

Have you read The Sandcastle Girls? The MC is a nurse in Syria.

That one sounds interesting. I haven't read that one, and have read the ones I suggested, so this might be my solution!

Thanks, Jayme. I have not read it and it is on my TBR list. Could have used it last year for Elizabeth. :o)

Thank for the Farewell to Arms. I need a book set in Italy and I'm trying to read more classics this year.

message 22: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4475 comments I might have to do some shuffling - I was going to use Dread Nation (Dread Nation, #1) by Justina Ireland for Entertainment/Nay - face in profile but I might move that book to flag on cover so I can use this one.
Dark and Deepest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore
I just LOVE McLemore's books

message 23: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Katrisa, you could also use Dark and Deepest Red for fairytale retellings if you have that task.

message 24: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4536 comments I was looking at The Birth House as well. The MC is described as a midwife apprentice then a midwife. Is that close enough as a nurse? History/Yay

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Roz wrote: "I was looking at The Birth House as well. The MC is described as a midwife apprentice then a midwife. Is that close enough as a nurse? History/Yay"

I think I allowed that a midwife was equivalent to a nurse elsewhere, so go ahead.

message 26: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4536 comments Thank you Janice.

Katrisa | 4475 comments I noticed that Women Talking by Miriam Toews is on sale in Audible's 2 for 1 sale right now until January 1st.

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Just finished Long Bright River--I had an advanced copy, but it comes out Tuesday. Set in Philly, story of two sisters, one a police officer, and one with a drug problem who is missing as a series of murders start to happen in the neighborhood where they all live/work/grew up. It definitely works for Card 11 Task 6 Sport Nay--set in 2010 to present, Card 9 Task 3 Nay History River in title, Card 18 4Y Art Blue cover, and 23 3N History, set in Pennsylvania. Probably can also argue for 29 5 Y Science, Police Procedure.

Thanks, this one also has a character named Betty and checks about 6 other boxes. Who knows where I will use it...

Thanks Janice. I followed a link from Firestar and ended up with [book:The Hammer of God|35813]. Goodreads is not letting me post book links.

message 35: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments That is so weird! It worked for me. GR's search function has gone a bit wonky lately.

Hammer of God will work for the task. The Hammer of God
The Hammer of God by Arthur C. Clarke

message 36: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had One of Our Asteroids is Missing/The Twisted Men for this task, but I have added The Hammer of God as a back up. Thanks, Janice and Jayme.

Roz | 4536 comments I just saw that Beltrunner is on sale (kindle version) for $0.99 today. It seems that this is the only source for it. I couldn't find it through my library in any form.

message 38: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Good find! I've got a few $s in credits on Amazon, I might as well get it since I need to fill that task.

Jayme | 4533 comments For task Geography Yay - The book is set in Norway or written by a Norwegian author.
Does anyone have a good book idea for this task that is not a murder/killer type book? I have been searching and can't find anything. What I do find I have already read. Ugh

Card 18 has been kicking my behind.

That looks good too and my library has it on order. I may end up reading both books since I have several WWII tasks! Thanks guys.

I see you have plenty of suggestions already, but ...
Maja Lunde is a Norwegian author. I've read The History of Bees and atm I'm reading The End of the Ocean. I loved The History of Bees and I'm enjoying The End of the Ocean. They are ecofiction. Maja Lunde has written other books as well. And I love the look of The Mercies too, Janice.

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments For Yay- Sport The book was translated from another language to English, I assume Blood of Elves works. The original title is Polish, which leads me to believe it was originally written in Polish. I tried Googling and found info about it starting in a Polish fantasy magazine, but nothing more specific. Does anyone know if I am correct in assuming Blood of Elves was translated from Polish?
