Choose a tea cup, and your brew of choice.

This is where you can be sociable and get to know your fellow players. This thread is not for asking questions to the mods. It is purely for chatting.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments It's official... I can't ignore a challenge.

I promised myself that if you guys posted a challenge in the first couple of months of the year, I would sit it out. I managed to hold out for all of about 30 seconds. *sigh*

I have no impulse control. But at least the books don't have to all be 800+ pages, lol!

message 3: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments Sammy, I am not as good at individual challenges. But, I will sign up if you (or others) nudge me along. Or share and compare books. Maybe?

With this one you know all the tasks up front so you really don’t need to access a computer frequently 😉👍

I'll go look now. I leave at 5 AM tomorrow so I may not have time to assemble a reading list.

Edited: I stayed up too late for being up at 4 AM but I am in but at a very low reading level for me.

There is a status spreadsheet here which shows all the players, their current points and books read, and links to spreadsheets.

We've known for a while that Sonia is an evil genius! :)

Seriously, I held out for 30 seconds. What is wrong with me!? lol.

Yes, I caved, too.
My husband came home from work...
DH: What are you doing?
Me: Looking to sign up for a reading challenge.
DH: I thought you were not going to sign up for reading challenges this year
Me: Right 😏

Haha 🤣

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2000 comments Sammy.. Sunshine.. I feel you ladies..

I promised my self last year that as a new years resolution, I would not sign up to any group challenges until I finish uni and not start any individual challenges... Come Jan 1st I signed up to about 6 -.-

message 20: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments They could probably do a very interesting psychological study on us...

I'll save them the hassle : I'm completely insane.

I caved as well 😂🙈 One of my goals is not to commit to any individual challenges. Just no time. But I figured this was kind of like a team challenge 🤷🏼‍♀️ Clearly I'm just twisting things to feed my need to do reading challenges. And then there's also FOMO...

I'm another with the willpower of a wilted leaf.

Was not going to add to my list of challenges. Was going to spend more time actually reading and less time on GR... Jan 2nd and look what's happened!

message 27: by Lazy Days (new)

Lazy Days | 4 comments How cool is this challenge. I couldn't pass it up. You may feel all your willpower draining and promises made being broken but its really the the magic of the hatter making us powerless to resist.

I love this concept though!

message 31: by Lazy Days (new)

Lazy Days | 4 comments What is everyone thinking of reading for their Alice retelling book? I have started Alice by Christina Henry and loving it so far if you are undecided.

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments I grabbed Alice Games from KU. It seems to be a mash up of Alice and The Hunger Games. It will either be so bad it is good, or just bad- is my guess. Who knows, it might end up being a fun read. I will let you all know!

message 33: by Lynne (new)

Lynne | 199 comments I was planning on reading Neverwhere because I love Neil Gaiman, but I might do Alice Games since it is on KU. I second the recommendation for Alice by Christina Henry. Really enjoyed that. I liked the sequel but not as much as this one. (And she also has a good Peter Pan retelling - Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook)

message 34: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments Sighs, I went ahead and did it also because it looked fun and interesting. Why did I do this to myself? Oh yes, because I have an addiction. Now, off to figure out what the devil I just got myself into....

message 35: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments So what I want to know is how the mods of NBRC overcame all of our individual willpower. It seems that most of the people playing this Mad Hatter game had no intention of joining a challenge so soon after Tower Teams,

Have they somehow drugged us? Are there subliminal messages in their oh so innocent posts? It couldn't possibly be that they just come up with interesting and fun challenges. No. There has to be another explanation.

Also, to is good to know that Henry's Lost Boy is good. I keep meaning to pick that up. I liked Alice too.

message 36: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 965 comments There must be something in the tea. It's the only plausible explanation. They waited until we all were looking the other way and lured us with pretty tea cups and fancy tea and then bam! hooked. At least, that's what I'm thinking as I sit here looking for books.

it is a very pretty looking challenge... and there is always FOMO because you never know if we will run it again. ;)

message 38: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments I had to look up FOMO- I don't speak twitter. But, it is the right expression. Also, EMMUDIAWCHO would work.

I don’t speak twitter either but I do have kids 😂😁

message 40: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments That explains it. My two kitties don't text much, so I have to pick up the lingo through osmosis.

message 43: by Lazy Days (new)

Lazy Days | 4 comments Lol thank god for urban dictionary I say.

Thanks Lynne Ive added the Peter Pan retelling to my TBR list too. I'm enjoying Christina Henry's writing style.

message 44: by Lazy Days (new)

Lazy Days | 4 comments oooh there also a red riding hood ... wait stop and focus on challenge at hand!

message 45: by Lynne (new)

Lynne | 199 comments Yes I have the Red Riding Hood one, and I am going to try to make it work for this challenge so I can read it soon!

message 46: by Sammy (last edited Jan 04, 2020 01:04AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Yeah, I hadn't heard of FOMO either, but it definitely applies.

As does Jenny's slightly longer acronym, lol.

And I'm reading Neverwhere. Partly because I've been wanting to re-read it for years now, and partly because I really need to stop buying so many books until I have somewhere to actually put them! lol.

So, I ended up reading A Blade So Black for the Alice retelling. whilst I want to give props for diversity & inclusion, the story & writing just weren't great :(

Now I'm on the hunt for a tea cup... Any suggestions, Gin Partyers?

I have read it! am 100% up to date.

I found The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary on my TBR. There's a coffee cup on the LHS and a teacup (I'm 98% sure, anyway) on the RHS, so I think I shall go for that one :)

ETA: found this Listopia which might help: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...
I mean, I disdained all the options, but that's just me!
