John Farebrother | 44 comments There was widespread relief in the Balkans when it was reported in December 1995 that NATO was going to replace the UN, who had themselves replaced the EU in 1993 as the main international organisation responsible for dealing with the crisis. However, the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and its failure to deliver the human rights and democracy that had served as the justification for its occupation of Kosovo cast into sharp relief the limitations of this military alliance. The Damned Balkans - a refugee road trip: explains how this all came about, and how it has contributed to the configuration of the international order as we know it today, with the Middle East in flames.

Another example of charging in with overwhelming military force, then not having a clue what to do next.

Video description:
Watching the Hawks’ Sean Stone sits down with award-winning journalist and former FBI counter-terrorism consultant Paul L. Williams to learn more about “Operation Gladio” and the CIA’s historic affinity for propping up paramilitary groups across the world. Williams shares his experiences researching the murky history of Washington’s relations with the enigmatic Fethullah Gülen, an exiled Turkish statesman and clergyman, as well as documenting the CIA’s connections to the Taliban, ISIS, and far-right extremists in Europe and Latin America. Finally, we evaluate the modern-day implications of this complicated web of relationships.

James Morcan | 11378 comments Puppetmasters: The Political Use of Terrorism in Italy

The CIA has been accused of a massive intelligence failure in the run-up to the 9/11 attacks -- the result, it is said, of a moralistic and bureaucratic approach to information-gathering. But the CIA's spies had few qualms when it came to cultivating terrorist organisations and interfering in the internal politics of Cold War Italy. Puppetmasters reveals how US intelligence services exploited the P2 masonic lodge to prop up friendly Christian Democrat-dominated governments and counter the growing political influence of the Italian Communist Party. It was a ruthless strategy involving coup plots, right wing terrorist bombings and the manipulation of the Red Brigades. And it gave Italy one of the bloodiest and most protracted periods of terrorist violence ever seen in a modern, industrialised society.

Puppetmasters The Political Use of Terrorism in Italy by Philip P. Willan

Philip Willan is an author and freelance journalist specialising in Italian parapolitics. He has worked in Rome for more than 30 years and is the author of Puppetmasters, The Political Use of Terrorism in Italy, first published by Constable in 1991. His latest book, The Vatican at War, From Blackfriars Bridge to Buenos Aires, was published by www.iuniverse.com in September 2013. It examines the murder of Roberto Calvi in the context of the Vatican's engagement in Cold War anticommunist intrigue, part of a complex legacy of historic problems that confronted Pope Francis on his election. In the past he has contributed research to David Yallop's best-selling In God's Name, about the alleged murder of Pope John Paul I, and Charles Raw's The Moneychangers, an analysis of the relationship between the Banco Ambrosiano and the Vatican bank.

My mother's cousin was part of Gladio, staying in Austria for many years after WWII was over. I doubt he ever told his daughter he had over there or his long term companion that he was undermining their country.

He and I were very close. He was a good man, artistically talented, more educated than other people around, yet did that. He said he wished he were Catholic because he needed to confess.

"The Swiss defence department has given up the hunt for missing documents related to the country's top-secret, anti-communist paramilitary group, known as P26."

Jovan Autonomašević | 15 comments First I've heard of this. I must say I have no doubt about the existence of major, secret intelligence operations in peace time, but we shouldn't give their masterminds too much credit. Yugoslavia was controlled by its intelligence services, and they ran the war too, even as the country disintegrated. They're still around now, pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

In June 2005, the Netherlands became the 4th country to publish an official report on Operation Gladio in the country. Entitled "De Nederlandse stay behind - Organisatie in de koude oorlog (1945 - 1992) The PIVOT-Report No. 166", it was a joint publication of the Dutch Ministry of General Affairs, the Ministry of Defence & National Archives.[2]

Gladio: the Story of a Conspiracy https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/12/...

It is a mystery that the people know nothing about Operation Gladio. Despite the 300-page Italian parliamentary report on it, despite mentions even in the New York Times, despite coincidences like William Colby’s free-and-easy revelations in a Rome bar, despite studies and articles about it in the leftist press, and despite decades of its nefarious activities worldwide which know no limits, people have remained ignorant about the US/NATO-run Operation Gladio.

message 67: by James, Group Founder (new)

James Morcan | 11378 comments Operation Gladio is a NATO-backed paramilitary network established after WW2, originally inspired by fear of the USSR. It was also called the "Stay behind network", since if the Red Army invaded Europe, its members would 'stay behind' enemy lines and disrupt Soviet control. Officially non-existant, secrecy was such that these networks were hard for NATO/MI6/Deep state officials to control. Gladio was responsible for bombings, kidnappings and assassinations to such an extent that the network was publicly exposed in Italy in the 1980s and was the subject of a BBC documentary by Alan Francovich some years later.[1] The project was adapted in the mid 1990s as "Gladio B", using "Moslem terrorists" as a substitute enemy image for communists. https://wikispooks.com/wiki/Operation...

Sophia James (sophia100) | 33 comments I have just read a very convincing story about how the CIA knew that Adolf Hitler had survived the war. They also knew his location in South America and, in the 50's, concocted a bizarre, last resort plan, to return him to power in West Germany.
It was to do with the cold war. West Germany was the frontline but it was a democratic country. In theory, the Germans could vote in a government that could demand all American and British troop leave their country .
To counter this threat the CIA, or elements in the CIA, considered the idea of allowing Hitler to put himself up as an alternative candidate that would be controlled by them.
It sounds ridiculous but in the 1950's Hitler still had a lot of supporters in Germany.
And of course it wasn't out of the question that a German government might ask the Americans to leave. A couple of years later France did just that.
It is all in theHitler: The 1963 Interview that is in fact an unchanged printed copy of an interview given in 1963 to an English journalist that died in suspicious circumstances a year later.
