Jason Hein (jasonphein) | 43 comments So I am now nearly finished polishing my Novel "Arise to Fall" the first book in the long line (to be) of "The Varsian Kingdom Series"

I have a prologue of nearly 25 pages which is the history of creation in my world. How much of these 25 pages would be a good amount for an excerpt and how much would be too much?

Carolyn Hamilton (carolyn_v_hamilton) | 6 comments Generally, you want to start with some action to hook the reader into your story, not background. Can you work this stuff into your story somewhere else? I'd be concerned that a 25-page prologue that is just background would lose readers. There is a theory that prologues aren't necessary, just begin to tell your story, but I think that's a matter of personal choice. Most prologues establish a question that the reader must continue to read to discover more.

Jason Hein (jasonphein) | 43 comments Yes, I have actually scrapped this entirely as the prologue and written a different one that leads into the story with a few happenings that set the tone and what not.

This piece of history I have decided to use in a different book which will be a collection of short stories and poetry from the Varsian Kingdom.
