NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11077 comments My library website says most branches are open, but when I checked my account, all the due dates were extended to April 30. I guess a big announcement is coming soon.

Karin | 9227 comments Oh, no--our library closed today at 5 pm and won't re-open until April 6. I am not surprised after what I read on the MA gov page, and am so very happy I opted to drive my daughter there early this afternoon instead of picking her up this evening. I was able to check out a few books. I wonder what I have on my kindle that I haven't been using..

I wonder if we can still use overdrive and if there will be anything available by the time I figure out if I can use it on my Mac min and then get there. I'd rather not read books on a computer monitor, though, so I would have to be desperate and I could always read from Gutenberg.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments I was at my library on Sat (to return a couple things), but hadn't figured out my April reading yet (even though many of my challenge themes are already decided).

Now I wish I had. I figured out my plans on Sun, but then heard all the libraries were shutting down at midnight, indefinitely.

Sigh. Our books are also renewed till April 30.

Karin | 9227 comments They haven't changed the due dates on my library books, but I know they'll waive the fines. I don't think they had much notice, but perhaps it will be changed in the interim. Also, many of my books come from other libraries through our library network.

Joy D | 10105 comments Our library is still open with "limited services" but they have said they are extending the return dates on everything currently checked out.

message 7: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11077 comments They're are calling this a one day closing, but they've suspended all requests.

Not to be morbid or anything, but this virus reminded me that I really need to update my will, and learn about living trusts, avoiding probate etc. And of course I'd rather use the library for this type of reading.

Yikes! That won't hold you very long.

The electronic ebooks and audios are still circulating as normal in my library.

You could always start a free 2 or 3 month trial of kindle unlimited, which includes some audios.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments In Danish libraries (which might be different) we are all working from home and one of the things we CAN do is online services. My two library systems that I use (where I live and where I work), both raised the loan quota on e-books, maybe yours did the same?
We shut down from day to day - only staff on thursday, so lots of people in this situation. I was home sick, so I didn´t pick up more, but I have loads already.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12582 comments My library still has e-services-No fines will accrue for books during the shut down. Right now the closure is indefinite. The Township board is holding an Open Meeting on Friday to decide what can/should be implemented for the long term

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Ours is closed for two weeks, with the very real possibilty of extending.

message 12: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9227 comments As of today, all of the books due before this date are now due April 15--this reminds me that I have to do our taxes and so my time on GR will be very limited soon.

message 13: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Between Audible, Scribd, Overdrive, etc. I am sure I won't run out of reading material! I also own 2 or 3 books that I have not yet read.

Honestly, I am having trouble focusing enough to read. I am working from home and, at least for now, working is occupying my brain better than reading. That may change though. I am currently in between books and need to start some, and that is always a weird time for me--needing to become invested in a book...

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments I've gone from being a book hoarder -- to having my own personal library (1500+ unread books including hard copy and ebook). Guess I'll be finding out how many of those fit the challenges :-)

Ha! My exact thoughts. I have never had an "Own" shelf on GR's-so I set one up today, just for the books that are in the bedroom (as those are the ones I want to get to soon..

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments I wish that I could loan some of my 1500+ books to others, but outside of my neighbors I can't see that happening. I might look into loaning my Nook and Kindle books.

NancyJ - you are not alone in thinking about that. It's one of the things keeping lawyers with estate and elder care practices extremely busy these days.

It's one of the things that I've been putting off. That and my taxes.

When I started thinking about senior citizens at risk, I had to face facts that I'm getting up there in years, and I'm not in the best health.

Do they have any little neighborhood libraries in your area? I can't remember the official name. They have a website with maps to find them. I think they're all over the world. People set up a little kiosk in their front yard. You can drop off some books to each one near you.

message 20: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10105 comments Our library is now closed, and all "non-essential" businesses will be starting tomorrow. I am fortunate I just went to the library before all this happened, and checked out quite a few book CDs, which we are listening to at night instead of watching sports.

I am having a really hard time accepting that at 64, only 5 months shy of 65th birthday, I am in the high risk group! As I came home ladt night at 9pm from the office, I was greeted by a sign in the elevator that there are neighbors willing to buy groceries for those 65 and older who are at risk.

And then there are all the Medicare info and sign-up notices I am getting...a great thing but man beat me over the head some more and remind me I am almost 65!

I have never in my life had any ussue with my age. My 60s are killing me! 🤣🤣🤣

message 22: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments Well DAMN ... library suspended even curb-side pick-up as of end of business yesterday. The phone line said to arrange a pick up via the website, and the website .... as far as I could tell ... had nothing on it to make an appointment.

I have one possibility of perhaps getting those books but it doesn't look promising.

On a positive note ... I finally managed to get my driver's license scanned so I could request an absentee ballot. Note to elected officials - NOT everyone has a scanner or a smart phone available to do this and WHY haven't the licenses been scanned and submitted by the polling places where we've been presenting said IDs for over a year already each time we vote!

Rant over ....
