Thanks!

Joel (jhplotkin) First, thank you both for your quick replies to my post. I, however, should have been more precise in stating my question about what I was asking of everyone.

So, here goes: I would like suggestions for a moder-day, time-travel story. For instance, I read one called Time Cursor, by John David Krygelski.

Anything similar out there? I'm not asking for the same storyline, but a contemporary one.

Again, thank you for the two suggestions, gents!

Regards,

JP

Ben Nash | 118 comments A went on a time-travel reading stint a few years back. The best book from that group was Replay by Ken Grimwood. It was first published in the 80s, so I'm not sure it's contemporary enough for you, but it really is one of my favorites.

For some more recent ones, there's The Accidental Time Machine from 2007, Time Travelers Never Die from 2009, and The Guns of the South from 1992 (I thought it was more recent).

The Time Traveler's Wife is famous but only on my to-read list, so I can't say whether I like it yet.

Looking over at this list, I see a bunch of good examples, though only a few are contemporary. Still, you might want to check it out.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Hollow World came out earlier this year. It's a pretty good one.

I bought this but haven't read it. It looks really good. It was also a Goodreads Choice Awards finalist.

Scott Kinkade | 38 comments If you're in the mood for comedy, I highly recommend The Time Machine Did It. It's very funny and well-written.

message 8: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) The popular Replay is the book of the month in the Time Travel group: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/.... We discuss a variety of TT books there, everything from classics to books written by member-authors. Fun conversations and activities, too. And giveaways.

V.W. Singer | 371 comments It's not that new 80s to 90s, but it is set in the modern (future) era.

The Many-Coloured Land (Saga of Pliocene Exile, #1) by Julian May The Saga of Pliocene Exile (or the Saga of the Exiles). Excellent series covering time travel, aliens, psychic powers, and politics. There is a second follow on series Intervention (Intervention #1-2) by Julian May The Galactic Milieu Series based on what happened after the events of the first series.

Yes, I'd forgotten about that one.

Loved this one.

Doomsday Book is also fantastic.

message 13: by Joel (new)

Joel (jhplotkin) Thanks everyone! I will check out your other recommendations that you've made.

Some of book suggestions I've read, such as The Accidental Time Machine and Timeline--both excellent suggestions.

I'd like to suggest 11/22/63, by Stephen King.

Valerie (darthval) | 781 comments I purchased 11/22/63 a while back as a Kindle daily deal, but I never seem to get around to it.

Gary Mackintosh | 1 comments The Technicolor Time Machine by Harry Harrison is one of my personal favorites!

message 16: by David (new)

David Koppe (ddkkpp) | 1 comments Just finished "How to survive in a science fictional universe"! That was great... Lots of fun and mind bending...! Nice family story as the foundation..

Neal (infinispace) David wrote: "Just finished "How to survive in a science fictional universe"! That was great... Lots of fun and mind bending...! Nice family story as the foundation.."

I thought the book as too meta for its own good, and rather depressing. Not a fan of it.

The Forever War - Not time travel per se, but the implications of time dilation due to near light speed travel during a far flung galactic war. Haldeman's science fictional statement about his experiences in the Vietnam war and coming home.

The Time Machine - Naturally

The Accidental Time Machine - by Joe Haldeman as well.

All of Connie Willis' "Oxford Time Travel" books

message 19: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 348 comments The Proteus Operation a WW2 time travel adventure.
Paratime and Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, sideways time travel stories.
Time and Again and From Time to Time are more emotional than technical versions of time travel. Time and Again is better. Finney appears to have some other time related stories on his profile page.

message 20: by John (new)

John | 62 comments Time and Again is the one I would recommend.

message 21: by Tessa (new)

Tessa in Mid-Michigan (asata) The popular All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness has time travel--back to the time of Christopher Wren and others, with the characters meeting them. Recommended.

Marc (authorguy) | 348 comments John wrote: "Time and Again is the one I would recommend."

Me, too. In the sequel he throws overboard the whole mechanism of time travel that he developed in the first book, plus it's depressing. What I liked about book 1 in particular was the way he made NYC into a character. I usually don't care much for setting and description, but this story is a love story about a man and his city at a specific point in time.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 244 comments I would pitch you, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently #1) by Douglas Adams .

Described by Adams, as, "thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic"

message 24: by James (new)

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 244 comments Then follow it up with the sequel, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul

Pat (patthebadger) | 50 comments Tim Powers - The Anubis Gates is one of my favourites
