Pure coincidence I suspect, but interesting...

James Morcan | 11378 comments True Krishna.
I also heard a theory that the Titanic was sunk on purpose to gain a massive insurance payout.
Then again, there are conspiracy theories about every major world event that ever occurs, so I think it's best to never believe any one theory but also never dismiss any theory.
And therefore, I am enjoying reading all your posts.
Best wishes,
James

Sylvia (sylviahartstra) the title is Futility

I see you gave it 5 stars, Sylvia.
Do you think it was a prophecy of the Titanic incident? Or you think it was just a coincidence?

Sylvia (sylviahartstra) Futility was published somewhere around 1900. By that time there wasn't any idea of building the real Titanic. I have never heard that the builders of the ship have read Futility.
It's my humble opinion that the book can be seen as a kind of prophecy, a foreboding warning of the author. Maybe he was a visionary person.

That's another possibility, yes.

Íris (irissantos) Going to add that book to my to read list. Interesting.
I also heard the theory about the insurance payout but never really saw any proof about it.

James Morcan | 11378 comments Hi Krishna,
That Titanic conspiracy theory is same as the theory that the owner of the World Trade Center building (a guy called Larry Silverstein I think) agreed to "pull" the buildings and/or have planes fly into them to receive a multi-billion dollar insurance payout.

So the idea is the owner/owners of the Titanic sunk her on purpose to receive a large sum from an insurance company.

I got no idea whether any of these theories are true though.

Best,
J

The sociopaths or psychopaths at the top don't think in terms of good/bad or morals and principles like the rest of us.
Rather, they think in terms of $$$$ and power...Whatever "collateral damage" is required to get those things is of no consequence in a psychopath's mind...It doesn't even come into the decision making process...

James Morcan | 11378 comments Am still pretty skeptical about this theory, but here's a recent article I came across:

And here's a video on the theory:

Faith (faymorrow) | 309 comments How much more would the insurance payout have been worth than how much money it took to actually build the Titanic?

In fact, how much money did it cost to build the Titanic?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

the cost of building the ship was around 7 million dollars then and insurance was of around 5 million dollars

Wouldn't that be a waste of 2 million dollars?

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

yes, but the theory suggests that the ship which sank was not titanic at all. it was another ship called Olympus which was swapped with titanic.
Olympus was a pretty poor ship which already had a few accidents and so it was nothing more than a wreck....and so the insured money for Olympus was less.
