Play Book Tag discussion

I am personally adding a month on to my Fall Flurry challenge* and am going to read a book or two about 9/11. I have always resisted doing so, perhaps because it has always felt too soon, but rave reviews of a couple books by PBTers has me finally reconsidering that.

To that end, I am for sure going to read The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of September 11, 2001. The paperback version comes out next Tuesday, 9/8, and I have a B&N GC with its name on it.

If I get through that and have some time left at the end of the month, then I would also like to read The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland.

Is anyone interested in reading one or both of those with me?

*Before anyone asks, no this isn't for participation points like the official Fall Flurry challenge. The only reward is to read the book itself! ;)

I always read a 9/11 book in September, and Anita's rave on The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11-had me add it to my list, so I am in for it. When are you planning to start it? I just checked and my Library has it and there is no wait.

I literally was just talking about The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland and my interest in reading it, just a couple of days ago. I'm interested but would be a maybe... I haven't figured out what else I'm going to read yet in Sept. I cannot wait for Fall Flurry and am already planning out Oct!

I think it would get you out of your slump Charlotte (it was you too that is lagging right-ugh I am having a real hard time..) anyway, it is a heartwarming book-you will love it!

Joanne, yay! I am not going to start until later next week. The paperback comes out next Tuesday and I plan to purchase the hard copy and will probably start pretty quickly. Definitely snag it from the library if it is available!

Then, Charlotte, if you decide to join me for The Day the World Came to Town, I will likely get to that by the last week to ten days of the month!

Yea... my normal go-tos for reading slumps haven't been working. Thank goodness for audiobooks though!

Not me. I lived it here in NYC. I just can't. I have yet to go to the reflecting pools and gardens on the site. I don't think I will ever go to the museum. Like so many New Yorkers I have yet to deal with all the emotional fallout of that day and likely never will.

That said, I did read The Day the World Came and saw Come From Away - they are wonderful and I cried through them.

I do ask that for the sake of other PBT members like me everyone clearly identify in title post if it is a 9/11 read.

Read them both last year and they are excellent.

I really loved The Day the World Came to Town. It's such a heart warming story.

I didn't look at The Only Plane in the Sky Yet. I was really impressed by the bravery of the people in the plane that crashed in the field (flight 93), but I don't think I could read any more about the twin towers and the New York stories.

HIGHLY recommend The Day the World Came to Town. It has some sad parts - but is overall very uplifting and leaves you feeling happy about the good of people in the world!

And....I also highly recommend the musical based on the book - Come From Away. I didn't know there was a show, but my brother-in-law found out and took my sister and I after I recommended my sister read the book and in his words "we wouldn't stop talking about it".

I recently read The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, the audio was great!

But I also cried the entire book, both the happy and sad. That was enough for me this year but I add my high recommendation as well!

Chiming to agree that The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland was absolutely fabulous. And yes, if you want more- check out the musical, lots of youtube videos while we can't currently theater. It was overwhelmingly positive in such a negative scope.

I'd love to read The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 this month, and have it on my TBR- but just can't commit to reading anything right now, lol. Slumps got me good right now, and I think I need some lighter things to get me going.

Hi Nicole-Just wanted to let you know that I started this week-end. No worries that I will get too far ahead of you though. I have decided that I will only be reading one section per night for right now(they are fairly short) as it is a pretty heavy read and not something my brain needs right before bed. I am making notes as I go of things that struck me, or need talking about.

I am a horrible buddy. I bought the book last week and have yet to crack the cover. I am going to get to it this month though, I have promised myself.....

I haven't started either....But definitely on my list for this month.

My local book club will be reading this book in the next couple months, so I plan to read it in the next week or two.

I just started reading (listening) today. I'll set up a Buddy Read thread for us.

I usually listen to audio books on my walk, and this morning I was crying my eyes out as I walked in my neighborhood - its still so emotional to re-live 9/11.

I finished The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11-all I will say right now is that of all the books I have read on 9/11, this one was the toughest. The impact of the voices of those who were there struck me and knocked me back into that day.

Joanne - I agree, that book really took me right back to the day.

Well, I am the worst buddy read person ever. I finally finished The Only Plane in the Sky.

All I can say is wow. That book packed a huge punch. I totally agree, Joanne, that the telling of the day through the voices of the survivors (and some of the victims) as well as the first responders was incredibly powerful.

This is the only book I have read on 9/11, but I am glad I started with it. It seems like a fitting way to learn more about a day that left such a mark on our lives.

Definitely an emotional roller coaster to read!

Thanks for the recommendation! I think it will be a bit before I get to another one.

I would still like to read The Day the World Came to Town, and would like to find one focused on some of the military intelligence. I figure next year will be a big year as it is the 20th anniversary.
