40 percent in. This looks more interesting than I expected. Swap out the magic elements, this could easily be a historical fiction about Kristallnacht.
Nice chat with Rob today.
Put down several books we mentioned here:
The Prefect
Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns came up in discussing The Last Policeman series, which Eric finished and I'm mid-way through. They both have this whole pre-/post-apocalyptic vibe that fits the times.
Ron Reagan came up in discussion of Presidential reading habits -- I credit him for helping make Tom Clancy a household name. (The President in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns was also modeled after Reagan; although, I forget to mention it in our meeting.)
The Prefect is the first book I could think of that fits our November theme of "Election." I've run into others (Infomocracy and Interface come to mind), but not read them.
While hunting for books about elections afterward, I found Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America, which retells the story of Emperor Julian the Apostate reset in a post-Oil, religiously fervent, feudal America. I'm not sure "election" really comes into play in the sense we mean it, but the book has been entertaining so far.
