Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My 4 are correct and I probably won't add more until nearer to toppler since looks like we are in read whatever since bonus' are filled. I'm not much for planned reading unless I have to.

message 152: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Yeah, that's what I plan to do Travis

message 153: by Kazen (new)

Kazen My line on the spreadsheet looks great, thanks! With all of the bonus point tasks covered I'm gophering books I think will be quick reads (lower page count! humor! YA! romance!) and putting them on hold at the library. I'll probably slot them in the couples section unless they fill a desperate need elsewhere.

Huzzah Topplers! :D

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Stephanie wrote: "Cherie, how many books are you committing to? Any categories you prefer?"

I can do two for sure and maybe three. I have one or two books in mind, but I am still gophering. I can read just about anything, it doesn't matter to me.

I can read a book set in Africa. I will read a No.1 Ladies Detective Agency book. I think I have #13 on hand. I might be able to come up with a book set in South America too. I will look.

message 158: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I would think so :) but you may want to check with jaxnsmom on the questions and ruling thread.

Although it is never specifically stated, Bel Canto was based on an incident that happened in Lima, Peru, South America.

Thanks, Almeta! I think I will go for it. I have had it for a long time and I want to read it finally.

Kazen Camilla, I hope you are feeling better! Pneumonia, eep!

And I know it sounds weird... But were you able to get a lot of reading done, by any odd chance?

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Never had it but from people that I know have nasty business the pneumonia. Been a huge problem for me with animals though. Nothig worse than winter full of temperature fluctuations to spread pneumonia but, knock on wood, I haven't ha to treat any cases for a few weeka now. Maybe past the hump I hope.

And on the bright side there is almost 2 weeks til toppler to strengthen up to be a reading machine:)

LOL, not weird at all! Sorry to say that I was feeling too unwell to read - which tells me that I was really ill, since I usually read always when I have a chance; now I was just able to sit in the bed and cough and stare at the wall. I did try to read every now and then, but it was really slow, I often read the same passage three times without getting the meaning. Hoping to be able to get a little more reading done now that I'm back home and feeling a bit better.

Feeling better already, at least good enough to get away from the hospital and the i.v. antibiotics.

I will! We have an awful weather here, ugly slush coming down. Glad I don't have to go anywhere now.

Camilla | 2105 comments Stephanie wrote: "Oh no, Camilla! Hope you are feeling better:) stay warm!!"

Yes, feeling better now, thanks. It was annoying that I did not have GR access at the hospital, LOL! I was sure you all were doing all this marvellous planning and gophering, and I was sitting in a hospital bed coughing my lungs out.

It seems there are plenty of cases here during this fall/winter where normal, otherwise healthy people get it. I've always associated pneumonia with old people (and I'm not that old yet, LOL!).

Daniel added - Welcome to the team :)

Lanelle - Cherie seems to have covered the Africa and South America Categories so you don't need to fill those slots.

Annette - As above, we don't need Africa filling as Cherie has it covered.

Danny (dannyx) | 48 comments Ok so I finally get to say howdy to everyone! Really love the vibe and I can tell this is going to be a fun competition! Nice to meet you all! :)

Pretty new to the group and I wanted to help wherever I could so I 'updated' the spreadsheet a little to add a few features I thought might make things smoother when the competition starts.

Basically this version would do everything for those of us lazy of heart (like myself lol). Some fields are locked to prevent accidentally erasure of some really annoying formula but basically the fields auto populate all the calculations for group points (even the bonus points too), individual points and most importantly (for me anyway) it allows you to enter the book title(s) each individual is reading (or will read). I thought that might be helpful so we all know what we plan to read without having to scroll through a ton of different posts plus all our calculations are at one centralised location so we will always know where we are. The link goes to an editable excel sheet on onedrive which allows you to update your own stats (the locked fields do not need to touched) plus I included a couple notes (little bubbles under Annette's section) to explain the fields that had no specific label.

Link : http://1drv.ms/1z0XzA4

Please try it out and let me know what you think. Just go to the link and tinker away. Haven't tried editing it on my phone browser yet but it shouldn't be too clunky (I hope!!). Hope I didn't step on any feet but I was kinda bored! :)

message 183: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Wow Daniel, you've done some neat stuff with the sheet! You have great skills - I'm only Google Doc level myself. -_^ While the new sheet is pretty I like how the original fits on my monitor without scrolling and is easy on the eyes. And it seems like all the yellow and red field information is missing?

message 184: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2105 comments Daniel wrote: "Please try it out and let me know what you think. Just go to the link and tinker away. Haven't tried editing it on my phone browser yet but it shouldn't be too clunky (I hope!!). Hope I didn't step on any feet but I was kinda bored! :) "

Welcome to the team Daniel! You've done a great job with the spreadsheet. I just have a couple of questions:

I didn't get it why the team members have two columns? Is one for the book name and the other for points? Now in the example there were book names in both columns.

The larger size is a bit problematic, but I can live with it.

As Kazen said, the yellow/red info is now missing, and it's important info, so it needs to be included.

Re editing rights: I know I feel more comfortable if just the team captain/co-captain have editing rights, I definitely don't want to add my own books and progress into the sheet. It has earlier worked just fine for the captain (or whoever is responsible for keeping track) to pick up the books read from the reporting thread, so I would prefer to keep it that way. It's not like we will be reading hundreds of books during the week.

message 185: by Lynn (last edited Jan 28, 2015 03:24AM) (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Thanks for the effort Daniel.

As Kazen and Camilla have said previously the reason why I did the spreadsheet that way was so it could fit on most screens without too much scrolling.
Also think it's best just to have one person who can edit, otherwise you'll find things get out of hand.

If people prefer I can start making notes of what book is supposed to be read, but I've found in other topplers that readers tend to change their mind about what to read, hence why I left that out.
My instinct is that most people can keep track of what they are personally going to read?

Yes, I think it's enough at this stage that we know who is responsible for which slot, not necessarily the exact book. I have updated my "available for these tasks" -post (message #86) with possible books, but I may switch them around depending on what task I end up reading, as many of them are suitable for several tasks.

message 187: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Hi Daniel!
Thanks for taking the time to make a spreadsheet:) I have to say though I like the one best that we have been working with as it is easier for me to read on my phone as I don't have access a lot to a real computer :)

:D SMilEY YAY YAY YAY!!!!!! photo SmileyFaceYAY-YAY.gif

message 188: by Stephanie (last edited Jan 28, 2015 05:37AM) (new)

Stephanie Can't edit from my phone

We will stick with our original spreadsheet :)

And I would probably screw up the other one because I have a knack for doing that when I add stuff in from my phone :(

message 189: by Annette (last edited Jan 28, 2015 06:36AM) (new)

Annette Olsen | 205 comments I finally got on a real computer! I was looking over the spread sheet and it looks like all the requirements for filling the categories are filled except the one about jobs for your date? I can do either or both of those if you need me to but it looked like some one else was willing as well. If you don't need me to read those then I guess I will just choose stuff to read from the rest of the list. If I remember the rules correctly there is no penalty for duplicating those categories.... is that correct? Just want to double check before I start gophering!

message 190: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That is correct :) sounded like to me that you would still get points for the book but that the bonus points would only count once :)

message 191: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments The job for your date categories don't have to be filled because you don't get bonus points. So you can read them if you like or leave them. We are now in a situation where all bonus slots are filled, so read whatever you like and yes there can be duplicates.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
Penthouse Naughty by Nature Female Readers' Sexy Letters to Penthouse by Maria Maldatesta
The Secret Diary of Alice in Wonderland Age 42 and Three-Quarters by Barbara Silkstone I am not saying that I am going to listen to all of them, but they are considerations after I read my Africa and South America books. ☺
