Here's my non spoiler review

The scope was so big and there were too many characters. I would rather less characters and more explanations and character development dialogue etc

I'm liking it so far (view spoiler)[ I figure the aliens will become clearer as we get farther in but I know what he is....so that should help
I like his mom's want to protect him
not 100% sure the ring is REALLY what they say (couldn't they just have another one that's tied to someone else and show him that?!?! Who's to say this is really his father's ring?

Through Part 2

I'm still really liking it (view spoiler)[ the gold tongue guy was weird but I liked it - thought it was a unique species. I liked his long convoluted name and his message was ominous

I don't have all the species memorized but I'm definitely doing good with keeping them straight when I hear the say the name (the disadvantage of the audio vs book. Book I'd know the names better by sight).

I like his ragtag crew of kids but....the gold guy said someone was not his friend. I really hope it isn't the girl he saw in his vision ....

I'm curious, do you read a lot of sci fi? I feel like I do and I'm wondering if that's why I didn't like it. Because it didn't reach what I expect from a good sci fi novel

hmmm....I don't think I read a lot of Sci-fi.... but I had to look back through my books to see!
I read a lot of contemporary Mysteries, Thrillers & Suspense. I love horror, True Crime but not necessarily fantasy or sci-fi.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm liking this one more than you guys....

It's great! We all like different things! I'm just curious because unlike fantasy which can be wildly different every book with some similar aspects, sci fi seems hard for authors to make unique sometimes because it's usually always spaceships, aliens, etc. Sometimes I find one that's amazing, but when I read too many they all start to seem mediocre. The best one I've read so far is Children of Time

I think my favorite sci-fi, or at least the one I think about a lot is the Southern Reach but it might be because it's pretty close to horror :)

I like the spaceships, aliens, etc but I like when an author can make it different than other sci fi I've read, which can seem like it's hard for them to do

the school sounds lame - but I do love Zarra (sp?) managing to kill him 3 times in one day! hilarious! there are some pretty funny parts

I liked the banter and humor between the younger ones. I liked the different species and their own unique parts about them

I like that it left it open for a book 2 (with that last bit about mutiny). I'll definitely read it, hopefully get the audio again (even if it 's the weird robot voice! LOL (hide spoiler)]
