Helen | 438 comments Anyone else getting a friend request beginning with "Hi 4..." and a string of numbers? I've had 3, reported them and 'ignored' them. Two had no friends, one had only one book on their profile.

I posted about my exact experience on the Help Community and received the following:

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments A Goodreads member since 2013, I have to-date accumulated only 37 friends and 119 followers.

Prior to considering whether or not to accept a friend request, I suggest that fellow members access the requestor's Goodreads profile to evaluate the authenticity of their biography, if provided, their participation history, and comments posted within various discussion groups.

An adage worth heeding: "Someone who thinks they have a lot of friends just thinks they have a lot of friends".

Richard Bell | 11 comments Do NOT go on camera with them and expose your privates. They may try to blackmail you. Do not say YES to any spammer on the phone, even if they say, "Do I have permission to remove you from our call list?" It is a trap.

I read some excellent advice about this. If the person has loads of friends, but not so many books, they are a 'friend collector' , and to avoid them.

I never respond to spam calls on the phone. Especially those who have an sub-continent accent and say they are called 'Susan' or 'Peter' or other English names.
Then there are the recorded messages. Usually they say they are from a respected company. But I don't think any such company would use a recorded message to tell you there is a problem with your account! (I had three, supposedly from BT, in one and a half days!) My internet account was supposedly going to be cut because of problems. Three days later, I'm still on the net!
I also don't respond to Facebook requests of people I don't know. If we have friends in common, I still don't accept them if they don't have a picture of themselves. Not beautiful roses, nor their pet cat or children. Are they ashamed to show their face?
