I enjoy stories set in the Arctic or Antarctic. They are such rugged exotic locales, one of the few extreme environments remaining on the planet. International turmoil is erupting over the Arctic as nations stake their rights to the extensive oil and gas fields there, and the situation is worsening as the ice caps melt and the area becomes more accessible. So the novel is timely. It is an intense setting for the battle between scientists with monsters both human and inhuman. Without giving away too much of the story, I’ll just say the action is fast-paced, most of the characters sympathetic (one of the scientists is a stretch to believe, you will probably know which one when you read the book, he just seemed too monstrous no matter how his actions were defended), and, as I said before, the setting in the Russian Arctic is fascinating. An enjoyable read.
